Document your assumptions! I typically budget in a spreadsheet. My first tab will be the assumptions I am making. # items sold per month, price per item, hours paid, etc. From there my budget tab is nearly all formulas. Often times you can get a false sense of "realistic" revenue or expenses until you see how many hours/items/price etc it takes to get to that number. This also lets your forecast multiple scenarios. Be it during a budget presentation and your budget is challenged, you can quickly show the impact of the change. Or ongoing budget monitoring, you can change your assumption to reality and the rest of the budget will change along with it.
