In my experience, another major factor to protect your data from catastrophic even is the availability of a disaster recovery replica in a different region data center. A well configured/managed DR replica will save a lot of time and effort to quickly restored the operations by simply failover the databases from the primary replica (assuming, it is affected by disaster) to the DR replica.

After configurations it takes automatically care that your standby database is at the same level as your primary database and if you loose your primary site the standby database can be changed from the standby role to primary role very quickly. You can also have more than one standby databases and if needed one can be at the same level as the primary db and the other can have for example a situation of current time -12 hours or some other gap depending on the business needs.
