Understanding environmental needs is important. I've built and integrated sensors for explosives environments (ATEX proofs), underwater, and outdoor environments. Sometimes using highly rated let-it IP proofs or any other special proofs can be overkill resulting in a non-effecient system and loss of time and resources. choosing the right sensor rating is a very vital skill that an engineer must have to build an optimal and effective system.

The electronic insides of a sensor could be protected through "potting". The sensor could rest in an IP rated enclosure and deployed out on demand when required. In case of contact under mild but wet, maybe humid conditions, the sensor electronics may need to reside inside a gasket-sealed enclosure. There are more extreme instances where everything but the sensor head may need to be enclosed in a pressure vessel to withstand high or low pressures or hard vacuum. If the environment is high in radiation, you may need to use hardened electronics or shielding often starting with aluminum

Make sure connectors are sealed tight & cables are tough.

There are a lot of industrial grade sensors available in the market which are IP rated as well possess a rugged built which withstands to the impacts that occurs in harsh environments. These sensors are purpose built and are application specific. Many times it as simple as providing a bracket that add some physical protection of the sensor, or a small piece of PVC to insert the sensor inside the PVC.

Sometimes performing calibration on a sensor too many times, can cause a problem with the calibration of the sensor. Most of the time "stabilization" of the signal is not what it should be, or the signal that is expected moves too far from the expected calibration mark, which can point to a bad sensor.

During the design and component selection phase consider 2x as safety margin in place of 1.2x or 1.5x. This is a useful buffer because as a end user, you'd always want to push the device to it's absolute rated limit (sometimes even beyond). This safety magin will ensure that there is no burnouts or fatigue in system (electrical and mechanical aspect). Hard code system to run a sensor calib cycle at specific time interval or on startups. Record thes sensor data during calib to inform user of sensor health. Sometimes, using relative offsetting (eliminating start-up error or steady-state error) extends sensor use life.

Training / Visual signage & warnings for operators/service technicians. I've seen latex gloves used to protect sensors during a wash down of the machine. Despite IP ratings, awareness of equipment limitations for those using the machine can potentially avoid damage. Additionally implementing mechanical safeguards for clean down processes will help prevent damage.
