As a biomedical engineer working in a joint replacement retrieval laboratory, here is how I use my personal protective equipment on a daily basis. I wear single-use gloves, my lab coat, and a face shield for initial handling of retrieved orthopaedic implants that we receive at the lab (I have received some very dirty and 'smelly' implants in the past). Then, I put the dirty implants in the lab's high-temperature washer (unless that is not possible due to implant size or material for example); in which case I would use gloves, a gown, and a mask during the hand-washing process. Once that is done, I dispose of disposable PPE properly in our special bins designed for this purpose.
