In my experience of recruiting over 1000 volunteers within 5 years, the best way to include Multilingualism in volunteers program is thorough assessment of community needs. For example, in Ghana with different languages and several communities with daunting needs, it is very important to recruit volunteers who can speak and understand multiple languages to help embark on projects and programs for communities and the nation at large.

In order to increase your multilingual staff, you must be aware of your community needs. Despite the fact that Spanish is considered the second language spoken in America nonetheless, some communities have strong presence for other languages; Chinese, Creole, etc that must be considered.

In my experience, it is essential to know your community. I have worked in South Texas for all my professional life, and the majority of our patients are Hispanic. However, we do not have enough healthcare workers who speak their language correctly. Therefore, providing opportunities to volunteers who speak their language and can correctly translate for them is a must in our hospitals.
