In the delivery of contextually grounded programming to audiences across the lifespan, the architects of our curriculum for pupils and practitioners have been guided by Da Vinci's assertion “Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do.” This is to say that cognitively and affectively, meaningful connections must be forged betwixt theory and practice. In a good number of cases in continuing education, external stakeholders are brought in as advisors to exact some manner of litmus test for real-world application. In our case, external partners are invited into the endeavor as co-creators and often as instructional personnel--and remunerated for these roles. In this capacity, they invite others into the fold.

As someone who shares daVinci's birthday (April 15th) I know that consciousness is learned through the Arts. In 1993 I contributed to the "original" VAPA Framework (South Carolina). My OPEN EYES rubric was brought to the attention of Dr. Howard Gardner and he invited me to take his Arts PROPEL curricular approach online. My OPEN EYES combines PROPEL (Multiple Intelligence) with the curricular approach created by Josef Albers at Black Mountain College (BMC) and the Bauhaus. I am the co-founder of the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center (Asheville, NC) and my father, W. H. Powers co-founded UCSD with Walter Munk and Roger Revelle. UCSD's original manifesto is based on BMC.
