Regarding refrigerant based DX HVAC systems, one of the things people do if they have no or little control over a thermostat, is to close the dampers on the diffuser which the air is coming out of. This a practice to refrain from if possible as it creates restrictions in the duct work. When those air restrictions occur, the air handler cannot move the designed volume of air properly and this creates less heat exchange across the evaporator. If enough of a restriction occurs, the evaporator will start freezing up and if bad enough, the refrigerant lines will ice up to the compressor. Refrigerant in the lines will not “flash” properly and can enter the compressor as too much of a liquid and can destroy the compressor.
