My advice, given to many, is to find what brings you joy - to learn about and want to do- you spend 3 very quiet, isolated days to peel away all the layers - especially those of other peoples’ opinions for your future. You may pound the wall or cry or sit very still but you must find what is in your very core - that you wish to be- admit it to yourself - than go for it - no matter how many twists and turns you have to take to find what brings you joy! I suggest taking the "it's not what you know, it's who you know" idea one step further...it's who your mentor knows. Choose a mentor who: 1. You trust 2. Is accomplished 3. Has embraced diverse circumstances in their own career (their perspective will be broad) 4. Is well networked 5. Is genuinely interested in your success Ask them for a list of 5 to 10 successful colleagues who align with your goals. Ask your mentor to advocate for you with those contacts first, then reach out, one by one. Once those contacts are aware of your intentions, you'll be amazed at how they offer ideas, contacts, and opportunities you were previously unaware of. I've used this approach with former protégés.
