I agree! Many experts are not willing to share their knowledge for free in fear that they might lose income, that people will just follow their free advice and not come to them for a paid service. However, nothing can be further from the truth. The more value an expert gives, the more trust is established and the more people are willing to come to such an expert also for an advice specifically tailored to them. “First we try, then we trust”, like the character of O’Connery said in “Entrapment”. But this is, of course, a long-term game.

A good idea for building a network (but a long-term one) is also to mentor the young talents, to give forward. To support. The more people one lifts up, the higher everyone can fly.

In my experience, learning is an absolute must! Life-long learning is the only way how to remain relevant. However, what is equally important, is to put the knowledge acquired through learning into actual practice. Theory is great, but theoretical knowledge requires practice to become true mastery. Hence, I would add keep learning and keep implementing the new ideas, methods, ways that you have learned.

Key factor to position your self as an expert are: 1. Originality and impact of value based idea creation. 2. Global acknowledgment and awards (non-paid / purely organic or based on merit of work) 3. Global presence catering different continents & countries.

If you have a deep passion for what you do (not all do) then it will burn right through the way you talk, the things you write, & how you engage with others. Your body of work will provide examples and stories that support your passion, & allow you to enroll others in the work that needs to be done. Although your legacy provides the foundation you work from, there is an element of continuous learning & innovation that must occur to be able to help clients with today's VUCA challenges. Listen to clients, teammates, partners, & other stakeholders, then synthesize. Engage with the greater community in your field of work - from a consulting, industry, & academic perspective. Invest in self-learning & research from multiple sources. Teach!
