How can you personalize your speech to make it more relevant to the audience?

A well chosen and well delivered personal story works up the ears and elicits the genuine interest of listeners. This will be a beacon of differentiation in a sea of numbers.

When giving a speech. Research your topic. Know your audience and understand their goal, background and their culture. It’s also crucial to use simple language and adjust to their level of understanding. Avoid using big words, jargon and complex concepts to accommodate your audience.

One of my key strategies for customizing my speech to suit my audience is conducting thorough research on the specific audience I will be addressing. This research equips me with the insights needed to determine not only what to say but also how best to deliver the message.

The first thing is to grab the audience's attention. To so this you need to abandon the formal inhibition. Audience always expects a casual atmosphere & greeting them with a casual attire & attitude pays. I personally do the above while addressing youngsters (20-30 age). Secondly, pepper your presentation with funny anecdotes & personal experiences. Making the audience laugh keeps their attention riveted on the speaker. Thirdly, empathize with the audience (feel yourself in their shoes!). Apart from the above, your presentation should be well thought out & extensively researched.

Begin your speech with a relatable story, quote, or question that resonates with your audience. Adjust the level of complexity in your language and concepts based on your audience's knowledge and expertise. Be yourself and speak from the heart. Authenticity can best help connect with the audience on a personal level.

When giving a speech, it's crucial to know your audience and understand their goals - in other words, WHY were you hired to speak to them? What problems are you trying to solve? I don't like templated speeches. When I speak to an audience, be it a school or a company, I like to understand their culture and mission. Personalize the speech to suit them. So, for example, we had this problem and here's what we did to solve it - these are the steps we took. Then ask the audience what approaches they have tried and help them attain a better approach. Visuals are helpful, much more than multiple bullet points on a slide. Add value and inspire!

This is all about storytelling, and is the right place for the speaker to share one of their own stories; something that was a defining moment in their career, and also which can relate to the topic or theme of the speech. One of my former CEO speeches included an experience from his early career that taught him an important lesson on leadership. This allowed the audience to connect with him as a person beyond his role as the CEO.

Stories connect faster than anything else and they stay longer in the mind and have a higher impact . Too much info or data causes distraction and the attention span drops . Hence always have a story line for whatever needs to be presented .Data can also be made interesting by inserting stories or experiences . A dash of humour always works .

Somewhere in the middle of your speech or article, use past experience or story you have encountered which is relatable. And use this as an example with what you’ve learned in your topic.

Be mindful of the cultural background of your audience. You may have an excellent presentation that’s been well received by your audience in one country, for example, but the same thing could fall flat in another market. Adjust stories, language, and tone accordingly.

Normally people think that a presentation is a monologue - you go on the stage , deliver and come back . However to make it more effective and engaging , a dialogue is extremely helpful . Involving the audience in a dialogue not just keeps the interest levels intact but also helps the speaker improvise on his / her skills .

Engagement allows you to converse with people and help resolve doubts. That process in itself becomes more personalised in nature. You can curate responses based on the feedback you receive and use it as material to work on more content for your audience that is relatable to them.

Start your speech with an intriguing question. Get your audience involved right away. This interactivity brings energy to the room and tailors the experience to your audience. You can connect what you hear to various points of your speech on the fly, if you have the basic speech framework in place AND if you're listening for what you can incorporate from your audience.

One of the most important things in delivering a speech or a lecture is interaction. Ask questions, ask comments, ask what they have learned in your speech or lecture. There is no right or wrong answer to comments. So you have to make the audience feel that they are welcome to ask questions.

The invitation usually consists of the number of participants - size of your audience and what group or class; the venue; duration of your speech - time allocation; names of other Speakers; Q&A; among others. Nothing beats good preparation. You must come prepared because your audience will sense your lack of readiness right away. And almost immediately they will lose interest. Practice your speech. "Practice makes perfect," as the saying goes. Eye-to-eye contact is essential to engage your audience. Make the microphone your ally. It gives power to your voice. Posture. It will make you look tall thus projecting an aura of confidence. Begin with an interesting story or anecdote and always end with a bang!

One thing I like to consider when planning for a presentation is to consider those in the audience who might be skeptical about points in the presentation. I like to present in a brief story form an alternative perspective, identifying how that might cause discomfort, etc. then present how this might be ameliorated by one of the approaches I am endorsing. Speaking to those who are skeptical in addition to those I sense are supportive seems to unify the audience.
