A change is something very common in every field of personal as well as professional life. Change is surely not welcomed all the time with pleasure so to avoid resistance from colleagues or clients, we must be ready to defend the need for that change in the minds of people as the demand of the time. We must have valid reasons why change is necessary. We should counsel and explain others in the best possible manner and there will be no resistance from anyone.

To overcome change resistance among colleagues and clients, start by understanding the reasons behind their reluctance. Engage in conversations to uncover their concerns, whether it’s fear of the unknown, perceived loss of control, or past negative experiences. For example, if colleagues are resistant to a new software system, find out if they’re worried about its complexity or their ability to learn it. Address these concerns by providing clear information, training, and support. Showing empathy and offering solutions to their specific worries can ease the transition. And remember, understanding resistance is like decoding a mystery—once you know the clues, solving the problem becomes much easier!

Before communicating the vision for change, ensure that you have key stakeholders on board and that the change is aligned with the goals and values of the organization. Sometimes there is a simple solution that involves a minor course adjustment and not a complete system overhaul. When I worked as a school counselor, we had many students with failing grades and very low GPAs (grade point average). We decided to create a Great Panther Award celebrating students who made improvements in their grade point average. Seeing those students step out and be recognized for their growth was powerful. Their self confidence soared. We didn't need a major change, we needed a shift in how we defined success.

Give a shout-out to your colleagues or clients who are doing a great job adapting to the changes. Share their stories with others, like when someone comes up with a helpful idea. This encourages a positive atmosphere and motivates everyone to embrace the new way of doing things.

To make changes easier for everyone, talk to people from the start, share information openly, understand their worries, teach them new things, and show them the good things that will happen. Create a friendly atmosphere, so people feel comfortable discussing concerns and working together.

I tend to use the "ROW" framework: "repetition" of the concepts in different types of meetings; "ownership" buy-in and understanding of their own impact and thus engaging them personally; and "why" explain the why of the needed changes and then celebrate the small wins along the way.

Resistance is pretty common when it comes to change. You might not win everyone over right away, but once positive things start rolling in after the changes, those who were unsure might willingly hop on board.
