First start with identifying key business drivers that need high volume data processing. Once we identify these it becomes much easier to identify KPIs that align with the business objectives. Before jumping into the targets, baseline the current performance metrics. This will give us achievable targets. We can use profiling tools to understand the bottlenecks. Understanding theoretical and practical limits of our tech stack is also crucial while defining goals. Planning for scalability is a warning up activity. Achieving real time scaling always results in surprises and unexpected downtimes.

Consider both hardware and software optimization. Always start with CPU optimised instances with multiple cores. Plan the strategy of horizontal scaling/vertical scaling. SSDs are becoming cheaper resulting in faster results. Once we are done with the best configuration of hardware consider software optimization. Include load balancing wherever possible. Enable caching at all layers. Databases are the crucial components to optimise. Indexing and sharding are never to be missed.

After you have applied the performance optimization strategies, you need to evaluate the performance improvement of your system and compare it with your performance goals. You can use the same tools and techniques that you used to analyze performance bottlenecks, such as benchmarking, profiling, monitoring, logging, or tracing, to measure and verify the performance improvement of your system components, processes, resources, and interactions. By evaluating performance improvement, you can validate the effectiveness of your optimization efforts and identify any remaining or new performance issues.
