A famous way for optimizing steel use in civil engineering projects even before purchasing the steel required is to make a detailed , accurate and approved bar bending schedule (BBS) it helps to determine the quantity of steel required in construction of your project This helps to get the accurate estimation of steel. Furthermore you must use Computer programs to reduce steel loss and the best program I work with is CUT OPTIMIZATION I assure you that you will get 0.001% losses in steel .

From my experience, steel consumptions in civil engineering can be optimized in following ways. 1) Design should be optimal: don’t over- reinforced the sections as it is no way beneficial structurally & difficult to construct. 2) construction contract may be given fixed/ lump sum: misuse of the materials can be prevented, as contractors will not be paid for extra steel used then required. 3) during construction plan properly: bar bending schedule to be prepared before procurement and rebars provided at site according to it. 4) others: proper storage of materials and using of wastes wherever possible will greatly help in cutting down the cost of steel.
