The first step is to identify the need for an active control system in your satellite. This depends on the pointing requirements for the payload. For active attitude control, reaction wheels are a widely accepted solution. For missions whose success is critically identified by the pointing accuracy, it is important to include redundancies in the system at both mechanical and electrical levels. Having 4 reaction wheels for a 3-axis stabilized satellite introduces a mechanical redundancy. However, for microsatellites, considering the space and mass constraints, it is best to have electrical redundancies in reaction wheel actuators like multiple independent windings.
