How can you network without being pushy?

When reaching out professionally, I always start by understanding my purpose. This involves asking myself why I want to connect and what value I can offer. Whether it’s a specific question, seeking expertise, or sharing a common interest, a clear purpose guides my communication. This approach ensures that my message is not just another email but a personalized, respectful interaction demonstrating genuine interest and appreciation. It’s about mutual benefit and respect, shaping meaningful professional relationships rather than mere connections.

In networking, I prioritize being polite and respectful, recognizing that I'm asking for someone's valuable time and attention. I use a friendly, professional tone, address individuals by name, and avoid slang or jargon. Gratitude is key, whether it’s for a response, feedback, or assistance. I avoid making assumptions or demands and respect their boundaries, especially if they don’t reply. Spamming with follow-up messages or public call-outs is a no-go. I remember nobody is obligated to help me, emphasizing respect and courtesy in every interaction.

When you network, try to add value to the conversation by seeking to help. It's not all about you. To be helpful, you have to be curious first. What is the other person working on? Who are their ideal clients? Is there an introduction you can make to another connection? I generally go into networking events and 1:1 coffee meetings with the goal of learning something about the people I'm meeting rather than selling my services. It makes for a more interesting conversation. Also, if that curiosity isn't returned, then I know something about the person I'm meeting, too. And that is helpful for me.

I think this makes the other person feel comfortable because everyone is working on themselves. It is only human to be vulnerable with another human. Although make sure you don't sound like a pessimist.

Write a timely, precise follow-up letter about the issue you discussed and express a genuine wish to stay in touch. Instead of bombarding with requests, build the relationship by sharing useful ideas or articles, attending shared activities and being helpful.
