My experience has brought me to the conclusion that preparing for a conference in terms of the people that you want to meet (particular person/ type of people) and what you plan on saying to them in advance is the key to making participating in a networking event successful. One has to keep in mind that you may just get 60 seconds of mind space from a prospect, therefore your key messaging has to be built in that timeslot. To support your messaging, you could also have a card that has the key takeaways listed along with your details.

Experience has shown that it is best to be well-dressed and send positive vibes to all that you meet with a smile and well-prepared talk points from your own experience and research - If you are speaking to any of the speakers, please collect a point or two from the speaker's speech and use that to connect with them. - Thank the people who invited you to the event at the venue and via email post the event - Connect with the participants at the event via call/email by refering to the common points that were discussed at the venue.

First impressions count...and remember it can take a lifetime to build a reputation, but just one moment to destroy it! Attire is always important, as is a friendly demeanor and good, informed conversation. My biggest frustration in these situations is when I am interrupted whilst speaking with someone else (i.e. be respectful of other people's time and space). There are many opportunities to network at professional conferences. Go to the educational sessions. Select sessions that truly interest you. After the session, introduce yourself to the speaker(s). Let them know which points truly resonated with you. Ask questions. Ask them to exchange contact information with you for follow-up conversations and even for potential future collaborations. Go to the exhibit hall and talk to the people who man the booths. Again, exchange info with those who share common interests; you never know how someone you meet today may lead you to opportunities in the future. Be open to engage with anyone who may be someone you can collaborate with in the future, or anyone who may be a valuable contact down the road.

It is all too easy to just speak with people we already know - this is comforting, especially if we have anxiety/fear in talking with others. Remember, growth occurs at the end of our comfort zone! In addition to striking up conversations with 'strangers', I have personally found great success in attending different small group sessions, as well as socializing with conference attendees at lunch and dinner time (i.e. outside of the set times of the conference). It is amazing who you might be sat next to sometimes without even knowing it.

I would agree that this is a vital step in the process. Just think of the number of conversations and overall interactions that you have at a typical conference - few of these are truly memorable or lead to established professional relationships, long-term. It is important to add people to your professional network on LinkedIn, and soon after send them a personalised email/InMail/text message telling them how much you enjoyed meeting them, and the ways by which you look forward to collaborating with one another in the future. Remember to keep this professional, and ideally, mutually-beneficial to both parties.
