We all want to work in a place where we feel valued. Work can get well, boring. When you're constantly being asked questions or being engaged with by your upper management team it makes you feel like part of the solution. Even as a GM I constantly interact with my chef/manager team and get their opinion on issues or ideas to better the workplace. Making time for hourly staff members removes the "boss" tag and shows you're playing for the same team and pulling in the same rope. I'm not in favor of chefs who work in a methodical way, but rather chefs who are questioning. Let them ask questions, ask the team questions, and let them reach a common consensus. That's how we all share part of the work. otherwise it is about listening and doing, there is no human condition.

Work life Balance is very important which is a great motivation for any associate. If leaders can be flexible and approachable when their team approaches for schedule changes, that would help retaining the team to a great extend. This would reduce attrition and burnout. This is one thing which is lagging in the industry.

To this day I’m still finding difficulty balancing work life and personal life… it’s a day by day thing where I tell myself to make better decisions in each aspect to maintain healthy relationships with people. By working in this myself I can educate others such as staff member s to make sure they are doing everything they can to spend time with family or friends, to take a day off if they wanted to go to the beach. Creating memories is what helps us get through the long days.

In simple words the appropriate leadership style is " Autocratic Bevevolent style " for restaurant and hotels as the key . Concern, care, growth, ampathy, towards the staff cascading down from the top management ...As most of the task in hand is time,quality bound , stressful in food service and housekeeping . For an attitude of "sense of belonging" & responsibility of the output among all the staff combined will assure the correct result...

Connect the team to the food that they prepare, cook and serve. Educate them on the artisans, farmers and ranchers that produce the product. Instil respect for what they work with and never allow them to look at the raw ingredients as a disposable traded commodity. Lastly serve only real food and do your best to source as much as possible from your region.

Sometimes it just takes a little prod of goal setting and competition to get the team to rally around a collective goal.

So in terms of rewarding your staff, I think it’s also important to think outside the box and not do your stereotypical staff meeting staff gatherings, but maybe entice them with outings that are a little more adventurous that require them to really lean on each other as a team, and or that pure moments of just partying, that actually have nothing to do with the restaurant or hotel, or the general venue that they’re part of Allowing your staff to really connect with each other outside of work without rules and regulations is a brilliant way to staff and team members to stay as long as possible and commit

Be with your team. Give them individual little projects and help/teach them on daily basis. This will contribute and enhance the other points.
