How can you motivate remote workers to participate in safety initiatives?

Get away from calling any program a “safety program”. Everyone, remote or not, is tired of yet another “safety program” even most seasoned safety professionals. Safety programs are often viewed as flavors of the month. Change the narrative. Talk about how a person might feel and offer strategies to change those feelings. For example; “do you ever have a difficult time getting a good nights rest after a long weekend?” If so, try ensuring you have at least 2 glasses of water and try these relaxing stretches out before bed. I believe that old methods of trying to engage workers, especially remote workers, in safety protocol training is woefully ineffective. We need to get our thinking out of the newsletter, webinar, podcast box. Get creative to get worker engagement. Plan a safety drill that involves remote workers being in on the unexpected drill. For instance they come into yhe office and pretend to slip, or have one run in to tell the receptionist that another worker just breathed toxic fumes outside. All would have to be planned well, and monitored closely by leadership. Engagement of this type will reap multiple benefits. Break the box, don't allow your thoughts to remain in it.

Some strategies to effectively motivate remote workers in this regard may include; Training and Education: Provide comprehensive training on safety protocols and procedures. This can include online courses, webinars, or video tutorials. Ensure that remote workers understand why these measures are necessary. Incentives: Offer incentives for participation in safety initiatives. Recognize and reward remote workers who consistently follow safety guidelines. This could be in the form of bonuses, gift cards, or other tangible rewards. Gamification: Turn safety compliance into a game or competition. Create leaderboards or challenges where remote workers can earn points or rewards for safe behavior. This can make safety more engaging and fun.

Remote workers shall be added to risk assessment team and their knowledge to be used in designing task specific risk assessments. This will also motivate them.

The section rightly emphasises the importance of clear communication in articulating the benefits of safety initiatives. However, while newsletters and emails are standard channels, they may not sufficiently engage remote employees. A potentially more effective approach could be the use of interactive "Safety Dashboards," where real-time data on how safety measures are preventing incidents could be displayed. These dashboards could include personal stats, making the benefits of safety practices more tangible to each remote worker. This gamified approach could foster a more engaging and proactive safety culture.

With the resources, it will entirely depend on the employers capability. Question is, will the employer meet the necessary responsibilities to cater for the required items. The employer needs to review its Financial capacity. If the employer cannot meet the demand to get the required standard items than the decision may be reviewed for something lesser than the required as to get the job done. Whatever the required tasks maybe, it has to be legibly clear with simple easy to understand language. Thats when the SOP will be critically valued.

In my experience, this a good way to show remote workers that they are being recognized for the good efforts in safety and its one of the more effective way to introduce positive reinforcement as it increases the likelihood that the safe behaviour will be repeated.

Goal based recognition is very good. Rewarding extraordinary efforts by a workers own initiative, that is noticed by others is also a tremendous incentive to others. It is best if the recognition comes as a surprise to the recipient. And don't forget the ones who are doing the right thing day in and day out because it is the right thing to do. Set a recognition budget item to purchase tickets, gift cards, and "swag".

Recognition to individuals should a must in whatever they do and accustomed into workplace. If you uphold and recognised individuals in accordance with what they succeed in. That would be a major drive for workers to perform and extra mile in case of performance.

Feedback is important. Necessary. Don't make it a burden on the respondents to give the information. Incentives for the department with the highest completion percentage, for example, might make for a fun competition.

Clear and concise feedback and input sessions is pivotal to the success of any safety initiatives for remote workers; for them to feel the sincerity of leadership to involve all of its workforce whether they are onsite or working remotely. It adds a certain level of added confidence that they are heard and taken care off.

Feedback is the very critical part of assessment which indicate the satisfaction feedback from workers. Iam a Senior Trainer by profession and have been conducting trainings for different clients and have collected evaluation feedback of the good and bad comments. I do focus on the bad as my lagging indicators and construct them to their needs. So that's what it supposed to be like, and that is healthy for the company's growth.

I like to use scenarios, discuss possible outcomes, and highlight the consequences of those outcomes.
