1 Identify the root cause

The first step is to understand why your mentee is feeling plateaued. Is it because they have reached the top of their field or organization, and there are no more positions to aspire to? Is it because they have lost interest or passion in their work, and they are looking for a change of direction? Is it because they are facing external obstacles, such as a lack of resources, support, or recognition? Or is it because they have internal barriers, such as self-doubt, fear, or burnout? By identifying the root cause, you can help your mentee address the underlying issues and explore possible solutions.

I feel like my answer to all of these is getting repetitive. But's true: LISTEN. Listen first, and listen well. Listen to understand, not to instruct or "immediately solve". After hearing them out with lots of follow up questions, give them what they need. Maybe it's just encouragement. Maybe it's sharing opportunities they never considered. Maybe it's some feedback on how they're part of the cause. Maybe it's sharing a story so they know they're not alone. It all starts with listening.
