How can you mentor someone in R&D?

Clarity regarding expectations is truly essential when mentoring someone in R&D. There are mentorship programs within universities and in the industry, where responsibilities for both the mentee and the mentor are set in place. These programs are very intentional and you, as the mentee must take the initiative to be part of them. In informal situations where students/co-workers are looking for a mentor or guidance in their research, I as the mentor take the initiative to set up an intro meeting to understand if I have the time and the background to provide true value. I then set clear goals and expectations with my mentee. I usually create an accountability plan where there is consistency in communication, to ensure weekly goals are met.

Starting a mentoring process in the Research and Development (R&D) department involves careful planning and implementation. Clearly define the objectives and goals of the mentoring program. Understand what you aim to achieve through mentoring in the R&D department. This could include knowledge transfer, skill development, and fostering a culture of innovation.

As an R&D mentor, my approach is a blend of guidance and empowerment. Clear objectives, open communication, identification of skill gaps and skill enhancement are pillars of my mentorship. I foster autonomy, encourage collaboration, and lead by example, creating a culture of continuous learning. Exposure to real-world scenarios and industry insights helps them align their research with current market demands. Together, we navigate the evolving landscape of research, celebrating achievements along the way. Acknowledging milestones, both big and small, is key. Learning should be a two-way street,we should learn from mentees as well. Mentoring in R&D isn't just about imparting knowledge; it's about sculpting the next generation of innovators.

During my under-graduation I had to work on a thesis related to a topic which was a bit unconventional. This is the beauty of research and accepting the fact I took up the challenge. It took me around 4 months to create an outline of research proposal and that too after reading many journals and scientific articles. Sometimes as a neophyte in research, you are bound to get frustrated as reading relevant work of accomplished researchers and doing literature review of the articles require patience. However, the process becomes easier when supervisor defines the goal and indulge into the research with the same passion and dedication. Selecting a caring supervisor who always gives priority to the mentee and research before anything is crucial.

To mentor someone in R&D, establish clear communication channels, share knowledge and expertise, and provide constructive feedback. Encourage a collaborative and inclusive environment, set realistic goals, and guide the mentee in problem-solving. Foster continuous learning, promote networking within the industry, and be a supportive resource throughout their professional development.

What this really means is that, an R&D person should always be thinking of trial and error in the back of their minds. Always predicting what the outcome would be and planning for next steps. Accomplishments after failures are so much more valuable. Last thing would be to keep a development mindset rather than research one.

Let the person fail, within boundaries and keep them thinking of newer and creative ways to solve the problem. Be at an arm's length and let them have a space to evolve and learn at their own pace. Keep an open door for them in the event if they need guidance or soliciting feebback.
