To measure the impact of culture change on innovation with data analysis tools, establish key performance indicators (KPIs) related to innovation, such as the number of new ideas generated or successful product launches. Utilize surveys or sentiment analysis tools to gauge employee perceptions of the organizational culture. Analyze quantitative data, such as project timelines or collaboration patterns, to identify correlations between cultural shifts and innovation outcomes.

When changing culture it is important to capture the current norms and behaviours, and to measure whether those will change, improve or be sustained. Measuring culture change includes input measures, process measures and output measures. For example, if you business is not transparent about its everyday problems, the input measure could be number of problems raised, with the process measure being number of problems confirmed and actioned, with the output measure of solutions delivered with results. This culture analysis then shows more problems, more actions and more delivered brings culture closer to transparency for problems. Plus, diagnosis of issues is easier, not enough raised, not enough confirmed and actioned, or not enough solved...

Innovation is a blend of art and science. Science is all about measurement so that you can articulate value in a tangible way and create and replicate impact in a standard way. Art is about senses, experience and behaviour. Culture impacts innovation in a big way so you need to have scientific way to measure culture change to see how innovative a person, community, organisation or country is.

What to measure does relate to the inputs and outputs, but outputs & outcomes are the same. Outputs can be tangible or intangible. The separation into input-process-output helps deliver success. Inputs for culture change do include resources, but also behaviours. Processes include activities and processes (systems), but also behaviours. Outputs includes tangible new products or services, and intangible metrics of customer satisfaction or employee engagement, but also includes behaviours. For culture change to be successful, then the 'why', 'what' and 'how' things are done must be understood. 'Why' can be measured through alignment with vision, goals & objectives, 'what' can be seen via scorecards, and how can be captured via observation...

You can also measure aspects of innovation, such as creativity, ideation, implementation, and diffusion. Another method is to use natural language processing (NLP) to analyze the language that employees use in electronic communication, such as email, Slack, and Glassdoor. NLP provides insights from unstructured text data, such as sentiment, tone, emotion, topics, keywords, and themes.

Culture change can utilise multiple data analysis tools. Firstly, current culture can be measured via what people currently do, think and feel. Doing can be captured by time, or value, or observation. Thinking and feeling require participation to confirm assumptions built from analysing doing. Surveys, 1-2-1s, team workshops and observations can be used to build data sets on currently expressed thinking and feeling. Analysis can also be completed individually or through group work. My experience is that individual and groups are needed for success as the current ability to interpret the hard data is better when contextualised and diverse views are looked for. Communication of findings is best via multiple methods to catch different people.

The benefits of measuring, analysing and communicating culture change measures helps all stakeholders. Internally, transparency for the current position, planned destination and strategy to get there help foster trust and some support. Externally, demonstrating measurable, repeatable changes gives credibility and reinforces support for the required changes.

Building truth into culture change can be difficult when the data is not accurate. More pre-work is needed when accurate data cannot be obtained. Frequently, biased reporting, under-reporting and misleading reporting are used to indicate a current reality that is not true. When this happens, the measured benefits will not be reliable data. Thus for successful change, reliable previous and current state data is needed. I have always obtained real data through building trust via transparency and a willingness to answer questions and debate different views
