In my experience as a coach it is imperative that when you select who you want to work with as a thought partner that you spend ample time "contracting" together. This will include areas of focus, how you learn best, the expectations of how to show up to coaching sessions, and other areas that are important not to miss. All too often their is a tendency to "jump in" to the work which can lead to confusion or frustration in the future when there might be a lack of progress or trust in the relationship. Spend time contracting with your coach so that you can build rapport, earn trust together, and understand your roles before starting to get to work. This time spend will increase the value of your sessions as you discuss clarity and focus.

After picking a coach, it's crucial to openly share what you need. Tell them how you learn best, your personality traits, and what you're good at or struggle with. Discuss the type of feedback you're looking for, the support you need, and how you like to be challenged. Set clear expectations on meeting frequency, duration, and preferred communication methods. Establish boundaries and confidentiality to ensure a safe, trustful coaching environment. This clear communication lays the foundation for a strong, effective coaching relationship, paving the way for personal growth and achievement.

Set the Rules of Engagement right at the start. Make sure you get and give permission for candid feedback. And also get organised! make sure you have times scheduled, clutter of the mind and workspace removed, make the commitment and turn up.

Success as a coach is not determined by the success of the client(s). Coached correctly, every client comes to the realization that success is dependent upon them and not the coach. Success as a coach is determined by the efficiency and impact of the process to aid that client in reaching that awareness. If you are not engaged 1000% as the coach in and out of the session...you will fail.

One of the most effective ways for anyone to fully engage in any process is to create the habit of regular (preferably daily) reflection. Reflective processes such as journalling or the recording of specific metrics are invaluable to goal completion and making and measuring process. Self reflection and reflective processes should be implemented as part of any strategy and a good coach will work on designing and evolving the best reflective approach for individuals and groups performing tasks or managing projects etc. Equally as important is the coach getting the client(s) to understand and benefit from the results and lessons learned.

Feel safe to take risks and you be vulnerable, authentic self. With each act of vulnerability, a little more trust and breathing room is created. This allows you to be more courageous in tackling your goals.

Feedback can often be difficult when we are faced with evidence of our blind spots Remind yourself that this is an opportunity for growth. Your coach has your very best interests at heart. Seek their support and guidance and lean into creating a plan for change. Practice self-compassion and avoid judging yourself. Learning to be OK with being uncomfortable is part of the process. Creating deeper levels of self-awareness is how you will maximize the benefit of your coaching engagement.

Create unshakable boundaries for the coaching. One of mine is that the session is canceled if you show up on time. Wait a minute... What?! Yes, you read it right. My clients and I must be in the Zoom waiting room at least three minutes before the beginning of our session (fifteen minutes for in-person sessions). This is a time to center ourselves, breathe, and be entirely ready. If my clients don't meet this three-minute deadline, we won't have a session. Despite the initial disruption, they all honor and recognize the benefit of this firm boundary. It makes us thrive and our time together more powerful.
