The best way I found to do strategic planning of any sort is really to start by listening and reading. Regarding diversity; meritocracy is the answer unless it is motivated by unethical intentions. Then, it becomes a race to hell and a monotony of mediocrity with homogeneity at its center giving rise to mimicry rather than innovation.

I have worked in many industries and currently work in the church. I grew up in Alaska and now reside in the south. I am asked often whether our church is a black church or a white church. I honestly take offense to the question as our church has a very healthy diverse makeup that mirrors our community. We have to be diligent in our planning of all aspects of our organization to ensure that everyone is heard and represented. When 1100+ individuals show up every Sunday we must be very intentional in how everything is seen and observed by different people. We can only be strong when everyone is included and feels that they belong. Life is better when you collaborate with those who do not look like you and were raised differently.

I have found that the largest pitfall that most employers are currently facing is the stereotype regarding millennials. You have to meet them where they are and understand the world that we have created and how they perceive it. A precise vision with accountability built in, is really all they are looking for. They need to understand their place in the company structure and be given a voice at the table. I have seen countless times where they have been marginalized and dismissed and they have some really interesting and insightful thought processes that frankly, my generation doesn't possess. Involve and conquer.
