In the current demand for software engineers, qualifications have broadened to include those with an innate aptitude for the field, regardless of academic backgrounds. Experience and skill often outweigh specific degrees or university prestige. Certifications from reputable sources offer a practical way to showcase your abilities. In competitive job markets where candidates possess superior education or experience, certifications can tip the scales in your favour. Depending on the organization and role, certifications can substitute for formal experience or an engineering degree, especially when they align with specific technology needs.

To master software architecture with SEI (Software Engineering Institute) certification, start by gaining a strong foundation in software engineering principles and design patterns. Enroll in SEI's Architecture programs, such as the SEI Software Architecture Professional Certificate, which offers specialized courses in architecture design, documentation, and evaluation. The choice between TOGAF certification and the SEI Software Architecture Professional Certificate should be based on individual career goals, the scope of the role, and the organizational context. Both certifications have their merits, and the decision should align with one's specific interests and professional aspirations.

I'm not sure about the benefits of these types of courses. They are academic refreshers of patterns and best practices. Any practising architect deals with those on a daily basis. We keep ourselves up to date in many ways to be able to keep our job. What good does to us a certificate recognising that we know what we are doing every day in our workplace? I don't think the cost is worth the result. There are plenty of free resources to refresh ourselves on software design patterns and analytic thinking. Getting a certificate doesn't add any real value, in my opinion, unless one is at the beginning of their career and needs to show that they actually have the necessary knowledge.

Choose SEI, TOGAF, or others based on your career. TOGAF suits enterprise architects; SEI emphasizes software architecture. Consider your role, tech, and industry. For platform focus, AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, CKA, or CISSP may be relevant. I prefer TOGAF because some companies require it. Lacking it could hinder my career progression.

This is not different from The Open Group's certification program but with four levels instead of three. The main problem with those certifications is the proof of work. NDA binds all we do, and no company will allow us to take a project we have delivered and submit it for evaluation. So SEI, just like The Open Group, settles for generic descriptions of the work done, stripping away the meaningfulness of the exam, and limiting it to an academic exercise.

Maintaining a certification as a practising architect is futile unless one is not practising. Indeed, it is necessary for SEI to keep the money flowing, just like any other certification body. They suggest the absurd idea that an architect working every day in the field and dealing with advancing technology on a daily basis can somehow lose their ability to do their job. It's an absurd concept. We architects spend most of our time learning new technologies, patterns, and so on. That's the job. I don't need to be validated by an academic certification body.

One useful thing about Mastering software architecture with SEI Certification is leveraging the extensive resources SEI offers. In my experience, day to day learning of the technology patterns for your specialization area is more important than doing certification. however, external company can use SEI certification for validate the skillset, so it is better to maintain SEI certification and learn the practical skills.

Certification provides you an opportunity to understand and learn the theory and understand the body of knowledge. You need to practice, apply, learn and do loop to improve yourself in your craft.

The main objective of high-quality certification programs, certificates backed up by a well-recognized authorities in the field, is to expose candidates to topics that matter for an industry. They help smooth out differences in background knowledge and experience as well as motivate people to invest time and energy in a guided self-education. Usually, the process of attaining a certificate is equally valuable as the certificate itself. At least, this is my personal experience pertaining to the IEEE Software Engineering Certified Instructor certificate that I had received in the past.
