I avoided Linux for nearly 10 years since I was a Windows guy. Eventually I was forced to learn it, and found it not nearly as daunting as I had thought. Now, after 3 years of administering Linux (desktop and server) it's my go to for almost everything. That said, I would have struggled if I hadn't had all my years of Windows and networking experience before that. But these days, Linux is very accessible. E.g. use Debian with the Cinnamon desktop GUI, it's almost like using Win XP. Start with a familiar environment that you can gradually expand from so as not to take on too much at once.

My rather atypical advice is simply to break things. Then fix them. That's how you develop both experience and knowledge. Take full advantage of any sandbox environments and push them until they tip over. You also want to master all the available commands and switch variations, whether it be for the O/S or applications like AutoSys.

You need self motivation, ambition and passion to begin with building that fundamental knowledge. Fundamentals would include hardware, software and soft skills. Know your areas of strengths and build there. Technology is always changing and we should be an agile learner. Certifications and maintaining the certifications is very important to staying up to date with new iterations of products.

Never stop learning and digesting Linux. LinkedIN has great short courses. Build - Test - Destroy - Rebuild VMs. With the loss of Centos is a bit harder - but it can be done. Yeah at 62 I cannot do it night and day, but I create DOCs so my process is repeatable - dependable and reliable. I learned a lot from my coworker Jim Mathew’s try a new method !

How do you master essential skills ? First lets assume you really want to be an administrator, because if you don't, your really wasting your time. In my humble opinion, if your not really interested in learning, you won't. However if you want a place to start.... that's easy. Look in /bin, /sbin, /usr/bin, and /usr/sbin . Look at all the binaries in there, and play with them, figure out what they do, read the man pages. You don't have to learn them all, but learn where they are, what they do for alot of them. Some won't make any sense, some will be alot of fun, and some really interesting. You have to MASTER the command line in order to become a great linux administrator. Learn bash.

A solid understanding of network fundamentals is important for sysadmins. They should have a good understanding of IP addressing, subnet masks, DNS, firewalls, routing, and TCP in order to implement and troubleshoot services on the servers they support. Knowing how TCP works and how to run a packet capture will put a sysadmin ahead of the pack.

Scripting and automation are indispensable tools for system administrators. They enhance efficiency, reduce the risk of human errors, and empower sysadmins to manage complex infrastructures effectively. Command line proficiency, especially with tools like PowerShell, is a crucial skill for sysadmins, enabling them to navigate and automate tasks in diverse environments. Moreover, tools like Ansible exemplify the transformative potential of automation. By creating and executing playbooks, sysadmins can ensure consistency, save time, and prevent small mistakes from snowballing into major issues.

Automation isn't just about writing scripts. It's about understanding processes and optimizing them. I've used Python in conjunction with cron to automate database backups and send notifications upon completion or failure. Always test scripts in a controlled environment before deploying them in production.

I've built an entire career around scripting and automating tasks that were previously performed manually. It is an extremely valuable skill to be able to evaluate a business or technical process and provide a repeatable, standardized solution to accomplish the task. It is also valuable to understand where technical procedure ends and where administrative procedures begin. This is not as easy to script and automate. The real skill is in being able to determine what can and should be programmatic and what things simply cannot be... then to work with the organization to build standard operating procedures and policies to encourage adoption of technical solutions.

As number of installations grow, its absolutely necessary to move towards state-configured system management. We use automation, to keep track of not only the initial setup, but more importantly the changes over time. Eventually, it will become a problem, not being able to update a system without breaking something else. In terms of network, use an IPAM. System management, use IaC. Patch management, build dependency graphs, to discover relationships betweens systems and their usage. Expect non-linear growth of problems, when not updating software. As much as possible, try to adapt a ever-green methodology and overcome the problems that follow as early as possible.

Scripting is not that hard, but is some weird mind thing that so many smart people just will convince themselves they can't wrap their heads around it. There are people who can do unfathomable coding in Python, and there are people who couldn't write a 10 line script. Be somebody in between, there are very few of them. What you can do in the GUI, learn to do in the cli, command line. Write down the commands used for the cli in notepad. Take that, and walk through a shell scripting simple course. You now have learned a most valuable life skill. TAH-DAH !!!!

When I first began playing with computers, before I'd even encountered linux I happened across a book called 'The Cuckoo's Egg'. It was a tale of one man's hunt through the bowel's of a university's linux systems for a hacker. I thought it was quite exciting. It was a foreign world of command-line commands, remote access to distant systems and the concepts of application vulnerabilities. Need less to say, I was hooked. So, my advice is to 'read a book' but not some dry, boring manual. Read a story about linux that helps you understand what Linux is, how it's used and maybe even it's history.

In case of hardware failures, data corruption, or cyberattacks, having secure and regularly updated backups is crucial for recovery. I recommend to always go with the 3-2-1 Backup Strategy.

Consider not just 'what' the security recommendation is... but 'why'... Security is more than methods and tools, it's a philosophy. Backups are only one piece of a much bigger picture.

Security is a continuous process. Regularly auditing systems, updating software, and patching vulnerabilities is key. I've set up automated scripts that use rsync to backup data to remote servers, ensuring data redundancy. Consider implementing a multi-tiered backup strategy, including on-site, off-site, and cloud backups. I was taught to have a backup plan for the backup plan. :)

The synergy among security, backup, and documentation is where the magic happens in system administration. An effective security strategy not only guards against threats but also minimizes the impact of breaches, making recovery smoother. Backup strategies extend beyond data files to encompass critical system configurations, guaranteeing that the entire system can be restored to a functional state. Documentation acts as a lifeline, providing detailed guidance for sysadmins to follow during critical incidents.

Monitoring isn't just about system health. It's also about understanding usage patterns and planning for growth. Being able to visualize server loads during peak times helped in capacity planning. Ensure log retention policies are in place. Older logs can be archived, but they shouldn't be discarded as they can be valuable for long-term analysis.

Monitoring and logging knowledge is important because it helps you keep an eye on your systems, ensuring they run smoothly, and quickly spot and address any issues that may arise. Monitoring tools help you see how your systems are performing in real-time, while logging tools store valuable information that can be analyzed to troubleshoot problems and improve system reliability. Setting up alerts ensures that you're promptly notified when something needs your attention, helping you maintain the efficiency and security of your systems.

In the realm of IT systems management, monitoring and logging are akin to the watchful guardians of the digital domain. They provide invaluable insights into the health, performance, and security of critical systems. To truly excel in this field, experienced administrators turn to powerful tools like sysloggers, as a good starting place for monitoring complex environments In the absence of effective monitoring and logging, IT environments become vulnerable to undetected anomalies, system failures, and security breaches. The consequences can range from operational disruptions to data breaches, potentially resulting in financial losses and damage to an organization's reputation.

Other tools to get to know here are CheckMK, Datadog, and Snowflake. Datadog, especially, is becoming very popular for monitoring Application Performance and Cloud Infrastructure.

Log management is a basis of an observability, which is in turn extremely important from a security perspective. Log aggregation provides with an ability to detect malicious events and cyber attacks.

For a tool to be truly useful and be used by someone other than yourself be clear about what you are doing and why. Fancy pipes and mathematical expressions look impressive but will be incomprehensible to others reading your scripts and perhaps later even to yourself. Be clear, concise, and bomb proof. Computers are so fast these days it is better to keep things simple and well explained. Things will not be any faster by being obscure.

Reflecting on past experience, proper documentation would have saved me countless hours. It's not just about documenting solutions but also about documenting problems. Creating a centralized wiki where all administrators contribute would have been invaluable in my career. Regularly update documentation to reflect system changes. Outdated documentation can sometimes be more harmful than no documentation.

Document new hardware and systems immediately upon setup, or as you go. Record your process, so you can reference it for similar setups in the future. Be detailed in your notes, incorporating screenshots where beneficial. This documentation may prove invaluable for troubleshooting later. When changes are made to a system, ensure existing documentation is updated. If you encounter an undocumented system, prioritize its documentation. Always note every action you take and its reason. Proper documentation not only serves as a valuable reference but also saves time for both you and your colleagues in the long run.

In this high-pressure context, the ability to quickly identify and address problems is paramount. However, data center issues are rarely confined to a single group or domain. A problem may originate from a server, affect network performance, and impact storage systems—all simultaneously. To complicate matters further, these systems are often managed by different teams with their own areas of expertise. Effective communication is the linchpin that holds together the intricate machinery of operations. The seamless collaboration among different responsible groups within the data center is not just desirable; it is indispensable when it comes to swiftly identifying and resolving problems before they escalate into debilitating outages.

Atlassian is probably the class leader here. Tools like Confluence and Jira have become staples in organizations of all sizes. Confluence is probably the best tool I have ever used for housing important project and technical documentation, and is great for fostering a culture of effective asynchronous communication.

I believe the six keys listed above can be mastered using the following: -Find a mentor; someone that knows what you are trying to learn and watch how to they troubleshoot or implement a solution. -Be curious. If you don't understand how something works, ask "why?" and go research how it works. -Be willing to make mistakes. A lot of learning comes from trial and error. When you are unsure if something will work, implement the solution, but know how to revert in case it does not work out. -Lastly, an overarching theme to all of these, is: don't be afraid to ask questions. It is okay to not know everything.

I agree with Christian's perspective. Mentorship plays a crucial role. Having a mentor in the early stages of my career accelerated my learning. Regular brainstorming sessions with peers have led to innovative solutions to complex problems. I would also suggest to attend workshops, webinars, and conferences. They provide fresh perspectives and expose you to the latest industry trends.

To excel in system administration, professionals should continuously expand their skill set, embracing new technologies, and refining both technical and soft skills. By doing so, sysadmins can elevate their effectiveness, contribute to the success of their organizations, and become the indispensable linchpins of their IT teams.

Some advice I recently gave to a junior who was struggling with the breadth and depth of our field. If you're feeling overwhelmed and just can't get something, don't feel bad, just come back to it later. Maybe in 6 months or a year. Or even at your next job. Often I was completely stuck on something and it suddenly became clear to me at my next job. Make use of support contracts if they're available - we can't know everything, so watching a vendor's support team as they solve the issue is often the only way to learn something.

The technical stuff is essential and documentation/communication is great, but I cannot stress enough the process of implementing change. Consider the philosophy of systems administration. What are your goals? Is it 24/7 high availability? Is it performance when it's needed? Forget everything you think you know about technical implementation and put yourself in the mindset of the business that is utilizing the system. Consider the impact of the system and your influence on it... "impact" measured in terms of business/productivity, risks (reputational, financial)... You can learn technical stuff easily, but it takes years to develop business acumen--- focus on things like ITIL/ITSM, change management, lifecycle, and security.
