What can a leader do when he/she is perpetually short on time and there are too many demands on their plate? They must firmly set some ground rules with their subordinates from the very beginning. The basic outline for these ground rules should be the acknowledgement that their problems will not entirely become manager’s problems. The manager will help but the ownership, care and feeding of these issues will firmly remain with the subordinates. This way a leader or manager can purposefully use his or her discretionary time to better strategize, plan and guide the department. In general, a leader's only way to increase his or her self-imposed time is by eliminating subordinate-imposed time.

As a Corporate Telecom Leader, it is very important to understand the baseline of what services you have, don't be guessing! A simple database of what services you have, where they are, how much you're paying for them, and how long you're contractually obligated for those services allows you to understand what flexibility you have, or don't have, to improving what services are being delivered to your internal users. After you have this keeping this information up to date is the next step. I realize this normally isn't a high priority when it comes to keeping the services running for the user community, but when you do need to validate a services information, having correct information likely is crucial.
