The purpose of the volunteer is paramount because they are volunteering for what? Understanding your volunteers and working with them to achieve their purpose in volunteering minimize conflicting goals.

It's normal for volunteers to have conflicting goals due to differences in their backgrounds and personal objectives. In my experience, I've never encountered a situation where all volunteers share the same needs or personalities. This is where the role of a volunteer manager becomes essential, as they need to be aware of fulfilling the diverse needs of volunteers. In my previous role, I used to offer different values within our volunteer program, recognizing that each volunteer was there for a different reason. I took the time to understand each volunteer’s goals in return for the service they provided.

Successfully managing volunteers with different backgrounds and ambitions requires understanding their needs and motivations. Assessing volunteers' goals and aligning them with the program's is crucial. Especially with differing viewpoints or vague expectations, professional conflict resolution is essential. Open conversation helps volunteers resolve difficulties and find common ground. Defining expectations and personal goals supports distinctive drives and promotes collaboration by highlighting shared aims. Transparent interaction and regular check-ins are essential for sustaining a healthy and inclusive volunteering group and addressing concerns proactively.

There must be ground rules for great communication within the team. 1. All voices should be heard and equally respected during discussion. 2. No tolerance for insults, marginalizing, belittling or demeaning comments. 3. Disagree with respect. 4. Value the strengths of other team members and their unique viewpoints. 5. Don't allow tangential discussion to distract you from the main issues at hand. 6. Try to understand before disagreeing.

I have learned that this can be particularly challenging when producing a fundraising event or executing a campaign with a volunteer committee. To manage volunteers with conflicting goals, we must communicate with them in a clear and respectful way. We should establish a regular and open channel of communication, to share our vision, goals, and expectations, as well as listen to their concerns, ideas, and feedback. We should also acknowledge and appreciate their contributions, and provide constructive and supportive guidance. By communicating clearly and respectfully, we can build trust, rapport, and understanding among our volunteers.

If you don’t communicate clearly and respectfully, you have already lost your team. If they do not feel like important members of the team or do not respect your leadership, you have lost your place of leadership amongst them. Volunteers are giving their time and energy to the betterment of one cause, their work and effort should be treated as such.

In my opinion, talking openly is essential. Listening to everyone's ideas and concerns helps us understand each other better. It also helps to keep your volunteers loyal to you and be there once you need them. I've seen that saying thanks and recognizing each person's efforts makes the team work well together. When we talk clearly, it builds trust and makes us a stronger group.

A volunteer coordinator ought to actively engage?volunteers in order to integrate their growing aspirations with the aim of the growing the?organisation as a whole. Reassessing these targets on a regular basis keeps volunteers engaged and faithful to their original aims. This involves highlighting each volunteer's contribution to the broader image, similar to assembling jigsaw pieces. Establish whether?their objectives are feasible, and provide the necessary support for achievement. Celebrate group accomplishments to instill a strong feeling of purpose and collaboration. The leader's duty extends beyond monitoring to demonstrating the value of volunteers and establishing a collaborative, energized atmosphere.

While it's important to remember the end goal, all volunteers need to feel heard, valuable and part of team. Guide to group and remember to stay focused and remember that each person adds value.

With years of experience managing volunteers and others, I suggest calling a, "lunch and fun" meeting to assist with facilitating and encouraging brain storming, and mediation with individuals. It may take a couple of these meetings but the, "group process" is the gold standard in situations such as these. Perhaps also create a, "buddy system" with those involved in conflict while utilizing positive and strengths'-based motivation.

The volunteers coordinator need to remind the volunteers what their goals were on the first place when they applied for the roles. Do they still have the same ones now? Frequently rechecking the goals of the volunteers help to align they currently hold and recharge their energy in order to be in line with their good intentions.

To handle volunteers with different goals, make sure everyone understands how their goals fit into the bigger mission. It can be a challenging task, but believe me, it will save you a lot of work later. Imagine your volunteers like a puzzle; each one is a piece. When it comes together, you will have the full picture. Also, ensure their goals are realistic and doable, and provide the support they need to succeed. When everyone's goals align, celebrate the wins together – it builds a strong sense of purpose and teamwork.

Aligning goals and roles is a clear step in leadership in helping your team thrive. With overlapping roles, volunteers are much more likely to step on one another’s toes rather than working together like a well oiled machine. This comes back to leadership. When you are aligning goals and roles you are building a team where each person has a specific and important role to play. Fall short here, and your team will inevitably fail, or move forward in an uphill battle.

Diversity and inclusion are paramount in today's professional fields, as shown by the efforts of law firms. These firms recognize that fostering a diverse workforce not only sets them apart from other firms but also maximizes the utilization of unique skills, perspectives, and backgrounds. Such diversity allows employees to contribute in varied ways towards a unified goal. By promoting inclusivity, organisations create an environment that celebrates differences and fosters a culture of appreciation, ultimately enhancing their effectiveness and standing in the community.

After working with volunteers for 40 years, it will surprise no one who has done this on a regular basis to conclude that it is difficult process, enmeshed with infinite opinions and diverse personalities. However, leadership that wants to create enthusiasm and a sense of oneness needs to listen and affirm those they are leading. Clear goals, with concrete objectives are a necessity, however, many volunteers are passionate and insightful; to think that leadership has all the answers, is fallible. Listen, watch, learn and respond...sometimes those whom we lead offer concrete, viable insights, to dismiss all ideas, is to be arrogant without necessity.

If people listen with understanding and try to see another’s view, they can be very different but be enriched by what is the same among cultures.

One way my team at Community First Credit Union gives back is by coordinating the 1900+ volunteers needed for the Fox Cities Marathon weekend of events. We must listen to our volunteers and race participants and respond respectively to their concerns and needs. Every year I think "This has got to be the perfect year with no changes" . . . but every year I am proven wrong. Our volunteers choose to help for a variety of reasons, some of which don't necessarily align with our event goals, but through listening and tweaking we can create a win-win situation 95% of the time. A small change can have a huge positive impact. A growth mindset is critical!

Volunteers are at the front lines. If they adopt competing goals in their roles, it may be because there is an underlying inefficiency or insufficiency in the tasks and roles and goals assigned to them that impact their perspective on how to perform the tasks, how they value the tasks, or if they would suggest a totally different activity or goal. Listen to the underlying motive behind the goals to see if there is something inefficient in your communication structure, event structure, or service structure that impacts how they perceive what they 'ought' to be doing and achieving. They may be noticing something valuable for the whole organization to adopt as missional!

Point them to the mission and strategic plan, which are organizational guideposts. It is the collective voice that takes precedence over individual ideas, opinions and agendas. There is no I in team and there is no I in board or volunteer.

I have teams of 10-15 that come once or twice a year. They are in Guatemala for 10 days. There have been some that I want to send home the next day...breathe...and then you talk to them and figure out a compromise reminding them that they are not here all the time and those of us that are. know the culture, language and lifestyle better. Or you could just say "suck it up!" and you will never see them again. I want them to catch a small change in their heart that makes them want to change the lives of others for the good, to help where they can and to be proud of what they are doing and then thank God in the process.

Set the ladder of jobs, have meetings with a Top Voice, and then put your people in order of Experience, Duties, and make sure that all voices are heard even if the people there are not all in agreement. Make sure everyone knows the Mission statement and the direction and goals of your Group. Its not easy to get even 2 people to agree on everything, if they did then someone is not being honest. No-one agrees with everyone on everything. Keep labels off things as that in itself can cause problems with people thinking the wrong things because of mis-understood labels.

Recognizing the value of volunteers and accepting that they can leave at a moment's notice if not feeling valued is an important consideration. Spend time in carefully assessing where a volunteer is best suited and can achieve goals. Always, always show gratitude. It makes a huge difference!

Remember, volunteers all have different reasons for being involved but none really have “skin in the game”. Watch out for volunteers who choose to do their own thing even after seemingly being aligned with the organization’s mission and event plan. Volunteers who ignore previously agreed-to steps in executing an event and commit the organization financially by entering contracts without permission, reserving venues before consensus is achieved and displaying passive-aggressive behavior must be managed and often times “fired”. They do not have “skin in the game”.
