How can you manage time constraints while integrating new technology into your daily nursing routines?

This is such a key component of staying efficient while integrating new tech/tools! One helpful strategy is to have a consistent system to patient care that works for you. This allows you to harness the power of new tech in a manner that’s helpful to your existing system. Additionally, as highlighted in a following point you are also able to assess how to adapt your system to then use the positive of the new tech to finesse your system.

Manage time constraints by scheduling dedicated training sessions for new technology and incorporating it into daily routines gradually. Use time-saving features and shortcuts, and seek support from colleagues and tech experts to streamline the integration process. Prioritize tasks to ensure that patient care remains efficient and effective.

As much as I am all about new tech, I have learned 1) prioritizing what tasks will be effectively completed using the new tech and 2) will the tech improve work flow or bog it down, are two of the greatest challenges to reconcile. However, Prioritizing tasks improves outcome of integrating new tech.

Breaking down the training into “bite-size” sessions is an excellent way to provide the training without overwhelming staff and interrupting their day too much. The shorter sessions have less risk of losing engagement. It’s also important to choose appropriate times. This may mean coming in early or staying late to capture different shifts at key times. A common time is the pre-shift huddle. And I always fine a one-pager exceptionally beneficial. The simplified, quick reference should provide tips for staff, as well as who they can reach out to for questions or assistance.

Make sure the training is in place. Try to make it "fun" and as a break from hour-to-hour duties. People will acknowledge a little break and already be more perceptive to the new technology. Or at least will not hate it!

In my experience, delegation is an underused tool and I agree that it creates mental space to actually learn how to use the new tech effectively. Supporting staff includes creating a physical environment conducive for learning.

As a team leader, when new tech was introduced, I found that adaptability was not the main issue, it was how to learn something new. As a nurse, historically, new technology made our workflow slower. What worked was teaching staff how to learn again and problem solve the tech integration.

Regularly evaluate how new technology is impacting your nursing routines. Consider whether it's saving time or if adjustments are needed. Reflecting on these aspects helps you fine-tune your time management and ensures you're consistently delivering top-quality care. Continuous assessment is key to integrating technology efficiently while maintaining excellent patient care. Do not be afraid to challenge the people who are implementing it!
