How can you manage program risks in a multi-language environment?

In my experience, language is not just a medium any person uses for communication but it embodies entirely different culture and a unique way of thinking and presentation… For some people particular words would mean one thing and for others something else. This can result in conflicts! Such scenario pose lot of challenges for programme success as lot of time gets invested in aligning different meanings and perspectives. Therefore, as opined, it would be prudent to define common vocabulary for programme goals, scopes, risks, opportunities etc. Not just common vocabulary would be helpful but also proper training and orientation is necessary to bring people on common page. It is required as continual improvement process!

Establish standardized coding practices and documentation guidelines to promote consistency across languages and minimize compatibility issues.

Multi language implies is a multi cultural environment. Many individuals only look at the language without the cultural understanding of what lies behind. Language is only the tip of the iceberg, if you do not understand what are the motivations that drive the people you will fail, even if you are "linguistically fluent". When dealing with multiple cultures is not just about "translating" is about "transgenerating" so that the message can be properly understood and communicated. Language is much more than words! And many times people who share the same language, do not share the same culture!

A traditional American rule I’ve learned in a book called The Cultural Map - by Erin Meyer - says: “Tell them what you are going to tell them, then tell then, then tell them what you’ve told them”. Applying this “philosophy”, I’ve felt how much it improves the level of understanding and engagement from the recipients.

Where language is really a barrier, use tools, agree your set of tools to be used across the global program, if everyone uses different tools there is a possibility of misinterpretation. Aside from the chosen tool, ensure the message has been understood and can be acted upon. I have been in rooms where everyone speaks the same language but nobody has understood a word

We do have many translation options but the risk associated is with localization. Converting of the written text or speech to multiple languages is part of translations and we have several AI tools catering to this requirement. The emphasis needs to be laid on Localization too to convey the right information.

In a multiple language work environment, you must also consider that different professional paths also input their own paradigm of views and understanding, not just the words, but the interpretation. In this situation, benchmarks of theory and anticipated results need definition so that work efforts stay on track (i.e. dont' go off the rails.) this metaphor will not be useful to a culture that does not have trains in their paradigm. So make sure the team is able to understand and parables are not fully foreign to the team as a whole.

Local experts is an option, but making they understand and the. Translate the message across to the local teams effectively and effectively is equally, if not more important All Teams must understand what is being asked of them The Big Global Program Picture, the more detailed deliverables and the granular tasks must be understood in order to be successful

In my experience, when working in a multi-language environment, the inclusion of local and native speakers is key to mitigate risks. They provide context, cultural nuances and accuracy to the translation. For example some words don’t have any exact equivalent meaning in another language(e.g. empowerment: there is no exact equivalent in French…)

Engaging local experts unlocks invaluable linguistic and cultural insights, mitigating risks and building trust for a smooth and successful multi-language program. When I have worked with individuals abroad, leading with questions fosters an environment of understanding.

As a successful program manager managing multimillion dollar programs across multiple countries and cultures I have found that listening first, respecting input and cultures next as integral assets and working the project as a process to success mentoring those assets as essential to the success of the project and the corporation.

during my time in South Sudan as programme coordinator, I used to collaborate with local experts and appreciate diversity and also encourage them. The 2nd thing I did engage youth who have political and social knowledge of the area and I used sit with them and discuss ideas for program development and improvement.

In a cross-border enterprise or engagement, start by knowing how different national cultures perceive and deal with risk before dealing with language factors. Then factor in risk attitudes of the industry, organisations and professions to get a good grip. Like beauty, risk is in the eye of the beholder, it has to be personalised.

In my past roles and particularly in my current position, I've observed that despite stakeholders being fluent in the same language (typically English, often as a second language), the primary challenge often lies in understanding the underlying message. Cultural differences can present significant obstacles to overcome. Patience, an open mind, clear communication, and the practice of rephrasing can all facilitate understanding. Moreover, I've successfully implemented regular informal face-to-face meetings with my counterparts. This approach allows for major challenges to be openly and directly addressed at the management level.

While there must have n number of examples to such a situation where cultures and language are multiple for which translation, setting common grounds operational definitions etc would have helped. Some of the following insights might help bring fresh perspectives: 1. Having a Pictorial view of what your objectives are and what are you going to achieve. ( Having it as explicit as possible). 2. During my experience of working in India, Brazil and US where my team members and stakeholders were proficient in different languages, the following practices helped me to drive collaboration and to create a productive work environment: - Be sensitive to diverse cultures. Appreciate the diversity. - Understand and respect the differences in communication styles and work preferences. Appreciate the different needs. - Remain flexible and adaptive to language related challenges. Have a curious mindset. - Finally, setup mechanisms, and define/align with your stakeholders on end goals and objectives such that everyone is working towards same outcome.
