Like everything else, using portfolios requires habit. Be ready to discover that your students -or colleagues- are not using them as often or as efficiently as you planned. Teaching by example, showing of how you grow and manage your own portfolio, my get the point across much better than lecturing them repeatedly on the value of portfolios.

Nothing good comes from hording materials if they are not reviewed and used appropriately. There has to be a reason why you want them to build up their portfolios. Prepare rubrics and be open to include your students in the assessment process, from seting up some of the criteria, to designing strategies to communicate their doubs -or frustrations- without feeling exposed to judgement. And never forget that portfolios can be a great source of pride and motivation. When you can see your progress, you only want more of it.

Critically, ease of use and compatibility is key to successfully implementation of electronic portfolios. In the case of education, many different platforms with their various log-ins and security procedures can cause headaches for pupils and staff alike. Evaluating the platform to make it as effortless as possible for stakeholders to curate and evaluate portfolios, should be one of the highest priorities in the implementation of such a project. I personally always look to the Apple mantra of ‘it just works’ focussing on minimal interactions to complete a task.
