In my experience… I standardize file sizes and manage with art boards. I ensure every CAD is properly grouped and layered. I standardize the dimensions of each CAD proportionally to the project. 3D file exports are automated and standardized I write actions and automations to name and sort each CAD file

Right, different software serve different purposes, as a technical designer my go to's are Adobe Illustrator and Clo3D. AI helps me get a quick idea of what I want the garment to look like, but Clo is the real workhorse, carrying the pattern along with all the other information required for the garment to be constructed with super accurate true to scale details.

This is my go to first move to reduce and manage big CAD files — cleaning up the file itself! Mainly because it also improves your working experience when you have to edit the file (ya know we don’t want the spinning beach ball)! In addition to the above, you can also delete old swatches and brushes you’re not using in the file, rasterize big images, & rasterize the CAD on your construction page but keep the vector CAD on your main page. If you’re working with laces or really intricate fills / swatches / brushes: be aware of your file size that you’re utilizing for the asset. It’s important to make that as small as possible before using it to create a brush or swatch.

A few tricks for Clo3D for intimates; - Use the largest particle distance you can get away with while preserving details, especially for large pattern pieces - Displacement maps are overkill for most laces and will slow your file down without showing much additional detail - Use textures for topstitching instead of OBJ's, they're lighter and in my opinion look better in most cases - Turn rectangle pieces (ie. straps) to quad mesh, which will reduce their polygon count and help them simulate more smoothly

Vntana and Clo-Set are promising platforms. The true value in 3D files is the ability to actually interact with them in 3D. Being able to share a prototype of a product where the receiver can examine all the details from their own perspective could help to answer many questions about the design before a physical product has to be made.
