The threats can be seen through news reports of DDoS attacks against other organisations, watching for new/different techniques being used and the durations of each attack. But on the vulnerability side you need to be aware of the different levels of vulnerability you may have that could lead to a successful DDoS. Start at the furthermost boundaries of your network, usually your upstream ISPs, and work backwards down to the individual services being provided. I've seen well-protected organisations get knocked offline because their Internet provider got attacked, or attacks on companies like Dyn disabled DNS for dozens of multinationals.

As with any aspect of an incident response plan, make sure you create and test communication channels with critical partners BEFORE an incident happens. You don't want to be stuck in the middle of a DDoS attack affecting your entire network, only to realise you don't know how to contact your upstream ISP's hotline, or can't access your cloud based documentation to contact your IT Manager after hours. Knowing who to call for what actions, how to call them, and when to call them is important. This reduces decisions being made in a crisis.

5 Recover and learn

The fifth step to manage the impact of a DDoS attack is to recover and learn from a DDoS attack. You can use a recovery plan that specifies the steps and resources needed to restore your IT service to normal operation. You can also use a post-incident review that evaluates the causes, impacts, and lessons learned from a DDoS attack.
