Step 0 - Get to know your team. Each person’s experiences will flavor the work and the team leader needs to make space so that all team members can share about their background and also have opportunities to make personal connections with the others. Doing this step will make everything else flow so much faster.

Transparent communication is crucial—regular updates and agile adjustments are key. Prioritize tasks, focusing on milestones and efficient resource allocation. Therefore, to establish any deadline, know your team and its speed. Only then will it be possible to move forward and be able to correctly plan the deadlines. In my past experience in an 18-month construction research project we decided to work two days a week collaboratively and do ad hog work alone. This created a good rhythm of check-ins. We used Trello and a 4-week Scrum Sprint cycle to give our team one source of information radiating out that was kept up in real time.

You need to have a business person responsible for your project. Mention that this single person will be the representative of all interested parties so that too many opinions do not harm the organization and prioritization. Talk to him to prioritize the most important deliveries in the first releases. Help him understand the importance of the business value resulting from project delivery. And, always invite him to participate in delivery planning and review meetings with the team.

Absolutely, delegation is paramount in effective deadline management. Acknowledging that you can't do everything alone is a key realization. We only have 2 hands 2 eyes, 2 ears and one mouth. The amount one person can get done by enabling others to complete tasks is far more than one can get done alone. Without delegation we reduce our chances to move onto newer more challenging work. Those limited input output options we physically have are a roadblock to succeeding in a challenge environment. Get started early, build and train your team and then let them rock things that would be impossible for one person alone.

Perhaps one of the most powerful things when it comes to improving efficiency and sadly often overlooked. We sometimes don't ask for help as we fear we might burden others, this is rarely the case- on the contrary, most people feel embarrassed turning a request down! Asking for help can also bring in new perspectives which can enhance our project or help us learn and develop as more people apply themselves to our work. This can help build a cohesive team for future efforts. So, ask for help!

I've learned one can get into more trouble than one can get through. Upper levels of technical and program leadership require understanding how well things are going, categorizing risk, and putting the pride in a successful project ahead of the pride in doing it alone

Be genuine here and don’t do it to “check a box.” People can tell the difference between contrived compliments and real ones. It is as good or better to acknowledge the work individuals put into the work increments.
