How can you manage complexity and ambiguity as an Executive Coach?

The key is the adoption of a systems-thinking perspective, as the coach, seeing the interconnected nature of organizational dynamics and individual behaviors. Emphasis should be placed on cultivating emotional intelligence and resilience in clients, as these skills are pivotal in navigating uncertain and complex environments.

I use the VUCA framework to navigate complexity and ambiguity for me and my executive clients. I also work on my mindset to expect hardship and obstacles. This help me become resilient. I demonstrate flexibility by seeing the positive learning points in every setback. Combined with a growth mindset, I am able to navigate any situation successfully.

Mindset is everything, you can’t manage ambiguity and complexity without a strong mindset. Here are some things I found most helpful: ?Practice self-care (whatever that means to you) ?Be adaptable to change ?Be mindful of what drains your energy and what charges it ?Get coaching (even coaches need coaches) ?Be present. Focusing on the now helps manage stress and ambiguity ?Practice discernment by separating issues and eliminating assumptions ?Complexity requires curiosity to pull things apart, like a giant puzzle; start with the big picture, pull pieces apart, and then bring the pieces that fit together to execute ?Prioritize and use the 80/20 rule daily! ??Lean start-up mindset When I started as a senior executive leadership coach, I intuitively used the lean start-up model (Eric Ries). ?keep costs low - use flipcharts and no pretty handouts ? roll out to test, obtain feedback & learn at 70% product level ?identify the MVP - minimum viable product - to see which product my client will buy ?listen to their needs and adjust accordingly ?? Growth mindset - 'not yet' ? read, research, create products that are relevant to the times (during Covid and black swan) for clients ? continue to refine my MVP into hot sellers - very different between generation 1 and latest generation of a few of my key products ?? I took a six months certificate in foundations of neuroleadership, which has so much added to my work as senior executive leadership coach/consultant and action-learning facilitator. Now I am a neuroleadership coach and consultant as well as an action-learning facilitator who wants to help individuals to transform the way they lead-manage themselves, others and community with neuroscience findings. As an executive coach, you don't have to know the nitty-gritty of your clients' profession, however, it helps to broaden your own skills as a coach. Here're a few ways to do that: Cross-disciplinary learning: Explore fields beyond coaching, like psychology, sociology, or neuroscience. Integrating insights from diverse disciplines can provide fresh perspectives. Mentorship: Seek guidance and wisdom from experienced coaches or mentors who have successfully navigated complex coaching situations. Continuous self-assessment: Regularly evaluate your strengths and areas for improvement. Honest self-reflection is key to refining your skills and adapting to new challenges.

As much as it can be uncomfortable to listen back to yourself - recording sessions and listening back to them and sometimes working through them with a coaching mentor is by far and away the most effective approach in my opinion.

Use frameworks to define the complexity and ambiguity. The trademarked framework I use with my clients is the RAFT?? formula. R= results (or events) A= actions (or behaviours) F= feelings (or emotions) T= thoughts (or beliefs) Everything can be defined as on one of those 4 categories. And then we can also seperate what we can control from what we cannot control. We can only control our own actions, feelings and thoughts. And everything else is outside of our control. When we are able to accept this then we can start to work with only those things that are within our control (our thoughts, feelings and actions). This simplifies our area to focus and allows us to find control and certainty in times of complexity, and ambiguity.

??Accept the 95:5 Rule! 95% of our lives we have no control (case in point 3 years of Covid) and only 5% of control (that's our MC3). If we can accept the rule, ? we can let go of the things we cannot control, reduce stress and find peace of mind ? find faith in something bigger than humans to deal with the 95% ?
