Most advice focuses on grabbing attention, but equally crucial is fostering authentic connection. Investors can smell desperation a mile away which is an instant turn off. Instead, convey calm confidence in your vision while inviting them into your world. Hook them immediately with a provocative opening that upends assumptions and piques curiosity. Use storytelling to escalate tension toward a climax needing resolution. But loop back showing how this journey reflects investors' own struggles and hopes your idea addresses. Balance an attention-grabbing narrative with purposefully building understanding. When executed artfully, your story sparks imagination and cultivates an emotionally invested mindset primed to embrace your vision.

I've learned this from YC and never forgot it: The easiest way to hook people into your pitch is by starting with something that is known to them (or something they care about) and then presenting a twist. Just a quick comment: Offering a 'low cost' product is a slippery slope! My business partner gave me a mug that says, "I'm an angel investor. Talk to me like I'm 5 years old." I say that statement 5x per day! Some of my best tips to simplify your language: - no adjectives or adverbs - don't use the word "that" - no acronyms - use real stats/facts/data - no buzzwords or false claims ("There's no one like us" is never true.) Think about how you want your best friend to describe your company to someone else - that's what the investor wants and needs too. Give them a 1-liner (or max, two sentences) that captures your essence so everyone can share your vision and "get it."

Bringing this to the lens of the Cognitive Load Theory, also means that simplifying the amount of information per slide brings a reduction of cognitive load, enhancing learning.

From my experience, the investors I have pitched are never shy about injecting questions throughout the pitch. Many pitches almost immediately deviated from the deck entirely. The lesson I have learned is that if you are pitching "at them" you will have much less success than pitching "with them." Don't go into a new pitch thinking you know exactly what aspect of your opportunity will be most interesting or top of mind for investors. They all have different backgrounds, personal experiences, and unique vetting methods. Pitch a discussion centered around these things: why your idea matters, how it will make money at scale, why you and your leadership team are the right ones to pull off a big miracle, and how they (the investor) can help.

Make the pitch meeting as interactive as possible. You want to read your audience and engage them with questions or demo’s to make sure they are actually taking in what you have to say. The worst pitches are if you are simply lecturing for the entire time - it’s unclear whether the investor is interested. Collect breadcrumbs along the way and make sure to ask questions and check-in with your audience!

The sweetest word to most people is their name. The nicest voice to them is theirs. On my first discovery call, I literally tell them, I don't have anything to sell. The barrier is lowered! I get to know them first. I let people talk. I like to ask them questions. I understand their goals first...Then I quickly use that to inform the way I pitch (if it makes sense on that call). We have to abide by SEC rules, so I cannot always pitch on the first call. Having "test fit" calls have helped us convert more people than the hard sell on day one.

"End of pitch" call to actions are tough if you look past the obvious asks for next meetings or a blanket question like "when do you think you can make a decision?" Experienced VCs, PE funds, & Family Offices, know their vetting and evaluation processes. Usually, the entrepreneurs that are pitching need the Term Sheet and money ASAP, yet every investor type knows roughly how long it takes for each of the roughly 4 stages in their valuation, vetting, and due diligence processes. More often than not, if you ask for a timeline for the next steps, investors will be vague at best. It will be more productive for you to say, "...we need funding by X date or we will limit growth, miss a big opportunity, etc., can we expect a decision by then?"

If you are pitching One to Many in long hall. The interested guys should reach out to you for one to one meeting. Put a tie at the end of your pitch, like connect me over Linkedin?? etc. - Once they schedule the call, It's 80% interested after hearing the pitch. VC/Angels have to iterate documents and negotiate much more to gain better. - Atleast get a soft commitment from them, and same do with other Investor. Once you got 2 commitments. It's very easy to put the fund jointly with the 2 investors as they discuss themselves about your business.

Don't bore investors. Don't use the same buzzwords that everyone else is using. Don't make large and empty promises. Investors hear this daily and can spot red flags easily.

At the start you can use: A story, a prop or a statistic. Or you can be very different. Instead of pitching standing up, try to just sit down on a chair on stage and say "let me tell you a story" You will be then remembered as that person who sat down. Your goal from the pitch is to be remembered to the point of another meeting - people wont decide on your call to action (raise) from you 3-5min of fame.

Spend time to explain what’s in it for the investors/customers. A lot of startups say: “ we are ready to dilute X% equity with Y amount of post money valuation”. So far so good. Now what it means to me should be explained clearly.

I've helped students/startups craft investor pitches and the #1 fatal mistake is neglecting the narrative or story. They drop the raw data onto slides, have a wall of text, or worse- borrow a template from some other successful pitch, without considering if that matches the story they're telling. Successful pitches have a clear progression and show how their strengths multiply to make the team, TAM, traction compelling. I recommend laying out your preso like a movie storyboard with these sections: intro, solution, market, biz model, revenue, GTM, team. Limit the number of slides per section. Make sure you're telling a story or at least make the slides build on each other. Capture the imagination up front, have a big thought at end.
