TARGET AUDIENCE Who do you want to see your films; a local audience, an international audience, industry (festival programmers, producers, sales agents, buyers, etc.), or a genre-specific audience like horror film lovers? WHAT THEME General film festival or genre-focused? WHAT FILMS Based on the above, you need to determine what films you want to screen: art house, purely entertaining crowd-pleasers, or a mix of both. Additionally, you need to decide what sections you want, e.g., competition, panorama, etc.

1: As mentioned before, alternative products for your project (like special edition / limited release items) can be a huge boon for your project; because that drives the exclusivity that makes people feel like they have to discover something versus 'catching the 5pm train' on something... 2: Identify community groups, 'audience vectors', and other markets where you could host a screening series with different members of the creative team. 3: Pick up on a theme that you project champions and engage with groups that have a shared mission...they're engagement and additional support could be a massive boon.

(i.e. : When 'un-spooling' your fantasy/rpg feature at Fantastic Fest for example; inviting "Game of Thrones" author George R.R. Martin; or "My Hero Academia" creator Kohei Horikoshi could be huge 'gets'!

The entirety of the responses to this question are valuable, spoken with experience; which is exciting for me to see, as a consulting producer for operations and onboarding filmmakers -- when it comes to truly understanding the scope of detail and organization that is required from pre-production to distribution, we can see the amount of team work that is required of us from the infancy stages, to keeping patience required of us to see it through to the very end, before ending promoting it too soon. I often see great teams not promoting/distributing long enough. There are so many festivals; big, small, older, newer, give it time to circulate with a direct plan of action.
The most successful festivals I've attended - film or TV - provide a structured and guided opportunity for discussion after screening. People emerge from a viewing experience with a lot of thoughts, curiosity to hear if their reactions are shared, and - in the best cases - openness to hear other views. I'd say divide the landscape into three spheres (given the way you'll be meeting other professionals). Sure, give yourself a big number on the scoreboard, and try to connect with 1 or 2 "industry a-listers / industry legends" (because hey, it couldn't hurt...). But focus the might of your work on connecting with the 'upper classmen' (3-5 projects ahead of you); your 'classmates' (1-3 projects ahead of you), and the freshman year class (people who have 1 project and are coming up); these three groups of professional grade people will form the bulk of your career (in terms of connections and collaborations), with an occasional assist from the industry legend (from point 1) coming into play...
