How can you make community development projects accessible for all?

1. Understand who ‘you’ are within the community-part of it or outsider; whether your social status resonate with any section; are you focusing on any particular aspect of the community? Why? What it is? 2. Is your effort on community development going to influence power dynamics within community? How? why? 3. Once you understand this, you will not look at community as monolith. Now map community based on access to power, decision making and resources. 4. Now democratise the spaces of decision making in research by resorting to affirmative action. It may even be tokenistic, but it will send a message. 5. Now seek opinions on needs and assets. 6. Analyse how these needs if fulfilled will change dynamics. 7. Map process of addressing needs.

To make community development projects open to everyone, start by asking people in the community what they need. Use surveys or meetings to get everyone's ideas, including those who often get overlooked. Make sure information about the project is easy to find and understand, and available in different formats for people with disabilities. Plan events at times and places where most people can come, including evenings or weekends, and offer help with transportation if needed. Also, think about having activities online so more people can join in. Always check back with the community to see if what you're doing is working and be ready to change things to make sure everyone can be a part of it.

Conducting a needs assessment is a crucial step in guaranteeing the accessibility and acceptance of community development projects. However, a common challenge arises as assessments are frequently conducted based on the perceived needs of the donor, often with a predefined focus. In my experience, community enthusiasm for collaboration is maximized when they are provided a platform to articulate the problem they wish to address. Instead of initiating discussions by exploring the reasons behind a specific issue, the approach involves understanding the broader challenges within a thematic area, such as health.

The most important thing is making the project design just demand driven. Thereafter, engagement of the stakeholder in the course of the planning thought the course of implementation, joint planning and working ahead of time on the exit strategies, empowering community and stakeholder’s and developing sense of ownership makes the impact long lasting. It is important to be clear on the purpose and what is possible when working with a community around their development. Regularly review who's voices and experiences are heard and valued and who might be missing. Too many projects work with the loudest and easiest to reach, even within communities and don't always effectively engage more widely. No one community leader can represent everyone and it is important for them to be clear when they are speaking for themselves and for their community. Start with where people feel comfortable and go to and don't expect them to come to you unless you do the work to genuinely engage on things that matter most to them.

If you are doing community development project and you are not involving the community then it is something other than a community development project! The community must be kept in the center of the brain storming, planning and execution of the program. Community-centric approach works when the donor is fully committed to listen to the community and prioritizes their voices over the interest and motives of the donor. The ineffectiveness of community development projects in the global development structure has to do mainly with this very weakness, namely a lack of genuine interest in the voices of the local communities and providing a platform to participate fully and actively in their development needs and priorities.

-Also, keep in mind what participation means and looks like. If meetings take place in person or online there may be times where people participate and engage at much higher rates than other times. In this context, consistency of meetings regardless of 2 or 200 people showing up is important. (If you build it, they will come.)

Community development is not like making cookies. There are no cookie cutters you can use; there are best practices and methods, but they must always be adapted to the context. I have seen organizations and people come into a neighborhood, put up a sign, and expect people to come because they are offering services needed. Yet, they did not understand how the community worked, so they ended up quitting before they succeeded. Understand and adapt to the context you are operating in; if something isn’t working, it may need some adjustment versus assuming the whole thing is not working. Just because it worked somewhere else, it does not mean it will work the same everywhere.

There will be many ongoing challenges during the proejct execution as there will be community memebrs who oppose the change to happen. Or there will be limited engagement from the other stakeholders like Govt. or from the funding agenceis. It is important to adopt to the dynamism arises in the community and devise strategies accordingly. Getting their feedback from the communities on on-going basis is key to the changing the dynamics. In the procees, we may also find that the project needs a pivot. So, we need keep these things in mind.

One of the great things about working with a very broad-based, rural community health coalition is that, even though the challenges are HUGE, it's not necessary to re-invent the wheel. There are proven approaches to address pretty much any situation. You find out what the best options are, re-jigger them to fit your specific situation and see what happens. It may work right off (unlikely) or not (probably), but you just keep adjusting and adapting.

It seems counterintuitive that an assessment that is meant to provide definitive needs and assets. HOWEVER, tomorrow always comes and with it comes new challenges or unresolved old challenges. The key is understanding how or if the needs and assets have changed and how to achieve “success.”

I remember hearing that the greatest barrier to aid projects in Africa is infrastructure. You need to be sure what you are offering or bringing can reach the people you seek to serve. Do you need different hours of operation? Special skills? Do you need to do some pre projects to ensure success? Assume obstacles and challenges; think through what you want to accomplish and what is needed. The rule of thumb I use is based off of an event planning system: if you are serving food, what do you need to eat it? What do you need to prepare? How will you serve it? Thinking through the various levels that it takes to make something succeed will help you address the barriers you might run into. Maybe not all but most. Expect problems; seek solutions.

This is absolutely key. Have you ever heard the story about how you can lay a penny on a railroad track, push it up against the wheel of a locomotive and the locomotive wont be able to move because it cant get over that hump? Well, that is a myth, but it's a good illustration of the impact of barriers of all kinds. You can put fifty service providers in a room to solve every problem a client ever even thought about having, and if the client can't get there because they don't have gas money, it all for nothing. it's often surprisingly small barriers that cause all sorts of problems. Don't lose sight of the little things because you're bust with the big things.

To add to the already extensive list of great suggestions: is The lack of trust. One has to create a sense of trust within the community and the people they are trying to reach because many of these citizens have been taken advantage and not fully given the agency they deserve. We have to truly listen and be empathetic to their needs instead of us feeding what they need.

This is a good one. Which benefits to you promote to whom? I've found it depends on to whom you are speaking. Explaining the benefits of a course of action to the client of a community health worker is one thing. The client may find all sorts of reasons not to try it. Explaining to a resource provider why the course of action is necessary may require a different approach. Explaining to the community why any of it is a good idea may require another. I find myself explaining things is terms of economic benefits more often than not, when talking to the community. It may be family benefits to the client. It may be conserving resources to the provider. Know the audience and know what you're talking about

Even more than that, you have to do your best to anticipate the evolving context. Look at the data and trends, talk to interested partners and try to unflinchingly anticipate how you come alongside a community and help or get ahead of what might be coming. Remove the most optimistic and most pessimistic futures and determine what's the most likely.

In my experience, when a community is aware that valuable work is being done AND there is success (and/or benefits) the results compound exponentially in a positive way. More people provide more assets making the needs less daunting and objectives more attainable. Then your needs change to accommodating volunteers ??

Community development projects can be accessible to all when you carry out accessibility review to identify ways of enhancing access to persons with disabilities eg. looking at the infrastructures, Services, the environment in which the project is to be implemented and engagement of the beneficiaries in programming and continuous performance evaluation to track gaps, needs and make informed decisions.
