As Covid took hold, my then-manager instituted a cool idea that we kept in place long after he left: Every week we were randomly matched for a 1-1 zoom with one other teammate for an hour, not even necessarily about work. I tried hard to avoid talk of work in most cases. In person, at lunch or over water coolers or in hallways, you get to know people as people. It can be critical glue if conflict arises, or can help you know personal stresses someone faces behind the scenes that need accommodation. And knowing peoples' backgrounds, aspirations, fears, interests, etc. helps you engage teammates more personally at other times. Plus it was just fun to take time out to laugh and relax, seeing people in another light.
