When a salesperson lacks enthusiasm for a product, it's important to understand the underlying reasons. You can't. So don't. Don't sell a product or service you don't love. You will fail yourself, your shareholders, and your customers.

The most impactful way I’ve seen this done is seeking out brand loyalists. Whether you’re selling a car, hairdryer or candy, for most brands there will be a section of consumers who really love the brand. I’ve always found spending time with them to understand why they love the product so much is both inspiring but also allows you to see the emotional engagement & appreciate features / benefits that you likely don’t see if you’re disengaged with the product itself.

I strongly recommend after my 13 years of experience with coaching sales people that designing vision board and start the day by looking into it. Make a short rituals when rejections hit to you or any other elements sabotage your motivation. Set clear goals at start of day and review them at the end ,Goals boost motivation ,add clarity ,reduce distractions.Moreover , anticipate the blockages ahead and make plan of addressing those challenges.

Coaching is a gift. Reps who can go out of their way to seek out additional coaching and really implement it almost always find themselves at the top. Especially if they can have a bias for coaching and feedback early on in their careers.

The question I would ask a sales professional first is ‘Does Passion Motivate You’? A true sales person is Passionate about selling as the motivation to see results which stems from their passion is more important than what the product is. In fact the more challenging the product becomes, sales guys are more happy when it is sold. Motivation is cyclical as it cannot be sustained long term. So if one is not passionate about the product s/he sells then one can motivate him/her to achieve a finite sales result through an incentive etc but it cannot be a constant approach. Many who end up in sales without a passion for sales would find even the motivation diminishing over time. The key is identifying the need gaps in one’s passion for sales.

23+ years of working experience in different roles across FP&A, Business Operations, Sales Operations. When I joined an distribution organization of FMCG products to assist streamline their sales with no prior experience. Here is what my short stint with them taught me. If I want to sell a product, I need to use them first and try to find out its unique value proposition. If I can't use them due to limitations, then I studied the product to help identify its unique value proposition. While doing this I also observed that, customer don't mind paying a higher price as long as the product is right for them. I need to have the believe it first to make my customers or end users believe in it. The personal experience always has an advantage.

If the salesperson is not even convinced and enthusiastic about the product - how is he supposed to arouse these emotions in potential customers? Looking back from my experience, I can say that enthusiasm and conviction about the product is more important than specialist knowledge or any technical details.

It's not easy to sell something you're not motivated about. However, you need to keep the following in mind: Just because you aren't excited about the product doesn't mean that in can't be helpful to your buyer. Don't pre-judge what can help someone else. Keep an open mind. If you do find yourself avoiding presenting your product to prospects, then it is indeed time to move on.
