No need to insulate water lines if the house has a crawl space. As long as all the vents are closed. If they are broken then insulation board should be cut the size or a tiny bit larger for the opening. Also make sure the the access to the crawl space has a door and is shut. Check around it for any air leaks and seal or fill with caulking of silicone. Therefore if these tips are performed at the start of winter there will be no heat lose under a house with a crawl space. Then with a crawl space of a conventional home or a slab. Whereas check any sinks that are on the outside wall. Making sure insulation is behind them in the wall. Additionally if it is a real cold snap leave the cabinet doors open under these sinks on the outside wall.

2 Drain your tanks

Another way to protect your plumbing systems in cold weather is to drain your tanks and valves that are not in use or are exposed to the elements. This can prevent water from freezing and expanding inside them, which can cause cracks or ruptures. There is no need to drain water heaters unless the house if vacant and there is no heat. If a house is vacant then the heat needs to set above 55 degrees. If there is not option for turning the heat on then you will need to winterize the house. Therefore turn the water off at the city main, drain the tanks, add antifreeze in the toilets after flushing them to remove the water from the tank and open all faucets and try to blow the water out of the water lines with a compressor. Blowing the water out of the water lines will not always work well and the water lines may still freeze. The best option is leave the heat on in a vacant house. Set the thermostat above 55 degrees.

There is no need for a backflow prevention device on a residential house. The city water meter has a backflow prevention device already installed. If the house has sprinklers there will need to be a backflow prevention devices installed on installation of the sprinklers. Even on commercial businesses the city water meter will have a backflow prevention device. Some commercial equipment may be required by the local city code to have backflow prevention on the equipment. Commercial businesses need to regularly check their backflow prevention devices to make sure that they are therefore in good working order.

Commercial buildings have multiple backflow prevention devices. These will be installed on fire sprinkler systems, HVAC systems (heating, chilled and condenser water loops), irrigation systems and on the incoming domestic water supply to the building. Anywhere chemical is used to treat water, it would be considered high risk and an RPZ would need to be installed (i.e. a cooling tower make-up line). This offers the greatest level of protection. These devices protect against both back-pressure and back-siphonage. Backflow prevention devices are important because they protect the public from health hazards.

5 Conserve your water
