How can you maintain editing consistency across different genres and projects?

Create your moodboard before you start editing. The more references you have, the better. Every new creation is a mix of old ones. Embrace that.

Specialise in a genre, create a portfolio example. Work on project with the same genre as it's by repeating you art, that will perfect it. I find that I give a new project to a video editor based on similar video projects we worked on together in the past.

Select one word that best encapsulates the focus the work you are about to edit or the goals of your client. Write it on a sticky note, place at the top of your computer screen and look at it often. Ask yourself honestly if the script you are writing or the scene you are editing is working towards that goal. If not, be sure to rework until it is. It's easy to drift away from your objective in the edit, but the sticky note keeps you focused.

Be purposeful. Drastic changes are not bad at all if they're intentional. Have a single goal. Don't try to do too much as the overall result will be confusing. Chefs don't usually use a million ingredients for a great dish.

The style should actually be based on a brand's identity and strategy. If not, get inspired by styles coming other creators for this genre. Finally, once you know the rules, don't be afraid to break them occasionally. That is also how you define yourself as a creator.

Custom templates and presets are a fantastic tool that will not only help you maintain visual consistency between projects, but also save a lot of time as you don't have to keep doing the same things from scratch. Those can be visual elements such as title cards and lower thirds, but also editing elements like zoom in animations, transitions and sound effects. I will also recommend that you either create them yourself, or customise them to a such degree that they are unique to your work.

Don't be afraid to ask questions before starting a project if you are not clear on something. This will save time for everyone. Get access to any mood board or pre- production information that will help you match the project's vision.

Use a review platform like frame.io or vimeo to collect feedback on rough cuts. This way you're saving your client and your staff from having to write out timestamps in email, consolidating feedback in one place, and creating a to-do list.

The only consistency you want is the level of quality. From filming, editing, color correction, motion graphics, music, audio mixing. Besides that each project should stand alone. What are your assets, what is the demographic, the use, and the brands identity? No one wants a video that feels consistent with others, they want another level. Knock it out of the park! That brings more work and that’s what you want to stay consistent!
