It’s important to remember that learning is a journey for the learner. Meaningful, long term benefits from the learning experience should develop the whole person, not simply one aspect of knowledge. As a learning facilitator it is crucial to understand the learner’s starting point in order to support them on their journey of discovery, which will develop their awareness, ability to evaluate, consider and reflect. The foundations of the learning experience should foster engagement, and begin to build key skills in understanding and self awareness which, when combined, will enable the resilience and adaptability for learners to be capable and active contributors to the task at hand and far beyond.

As a "pracademic" social scientist I've bee able to teach at two outstanding universities ancillary to my practical work. One of my goals in teaching courses related to the research and evaluation enterprise is to use each of my students' own lived experiences as illustrative of concepts and skills being taught. This requires - and it shouldn't come as any big surprise - knowing who my students are in terms of their lived experiences by actually getting to know them on a deeper level than as a face in the classroom. Then it's a matter of encouraging them to share those experiences and weaving the diverse individual experiences together into a learning tapestry of sorts; everyone learns the course material through the experiences of others.

One my favorite methods for getting diverse perspectives on a certain topic, be it around learning, understanding problems or coming up with solution is Six Thinking Hats. Thr six colored hats represent different modes of thinking: 1. White Hat: Focuses on data and information. 2. Red Hat: Represents emotions and feelings without justification. 3. Black Hat: Critical and cautious, identifying risks and problems. 4. Yellow Hat: Optimistic, considering benefits and positive outcomes. 5. Green Hat: Creative, suggesting new ideas and alternatives. 6. Blue Hat: Manages the process, summarizing and planning next steps. This method is useful for breaking down complex issues and encouraging diverse viewpoints.

4 Encourage and manage participation

As a facilitator, you need to encourage and manage participation in a way that respects and values the diversity of your group. You need to create a safe and supportive environment where your participants feel comfortable to share their opinions, questions, and experiences. You can use icebreakers, warm-ups, or check-ins to build rapport and trust among your participants. You can also use ground rules, norms, or agreements to establish expectations and boundaries for the session. A great way to begin with encouraging diverse perspectives to be shared is to start with an activity that showcases the diversity of the group in the session. It may be asking everyone to tag where they are from on a global map or share in the chat the division they work in or a favorite holiday tradition; any number of questions work. These allow each person to be seen and make the differences something to be celebrated from the start, so as you get into bigger topics, you can ask for alternate perspectives for deeper learning.

Diversity can also lead to conflicts or disagreements among your participants, especially when they have different views, values, or interests. As a facilitator, you need to address and resolve conflicts in a constructive and respectful way.
