A little secret for choosing the right framework is that frameworks and advanced programming language features go hand in hand. Let me start with an example: in order to extend C# with LINQ, Microsoft extended C# with lambdas, improved generics, and added extension methods. Frameworks sort of extend the language with extra keywords and constructs in a given semantic domain. The longest lived, most successful frameworks are the ones that integrate the most naturally into the language constructs. Frameworks that feature things that stand out as ugly or unnatural, for example strings with a special syntax or uninformative types or weak autocompletion tend to have a shorter life and be less effective than their counterparts.

Using a framework requires wisdom! Even the most powerful framework will not be able to do everything you want exactly as you want it, so try to avoid falling too much in love (and later out of love) with a new powerful framework. It's ok to have to write custom code, sometimes even lots of it, whenever the framework itself does not have the strongest features. It is always advisable to try to keep frameworks within their optimal range of operations, and not trying to get them to do everything at once, cost what it cost. Use custom code, or a combination of layers/services/etc. each with their own framework, whenever the framework of choice stops being helpful and you will get the most mileage out of it.

Keeping frameworks as they come out of the box and avoiding excessive customisation helps a lot with a simple and predictable update/upgrade path. Use the most documented features, do not hack things, and try to stick to the way the framework is meant to be used so that new functionality does not break your own custom additions.
