To do this, you must understand the cost/value of your time and how much time/effort your project will take with and without the tool. If the effective use of a tool can service as a force multiplier it can easily be worth far more money than it cost or you initially give it credit for.

One thing I've found helpful is: 1. Define your project - Purpose, objectives, scope, deliverables etc. 2. Project implementation plan - schedule, project control, quality control, human resource etc. 6. Monitor your performance - Apply monitoring mechanisms. 7. Improve the process by doing a project post mortem and what you can learn from it.

I have found that the data is the most important part of any GIS project. I always make sure the data is gathered and evaluated. I discard the data that is not needed and organize the rest. I then add it to a database and it has to be very precise in order to provide accurate results in the map. I do this depending on what set of information I want to relay and who my target audience is. There has to be a passion and interest in data analysis before you can attempt a GIS project because you cannot have one without the other. If it is displayed messy and inaccurate the info won’t work or if it does it will not make sense and be confusing. So without the desire to take time with the data, a clear useful map cannot be constructed properly.

In my experience Data is a great asset, no matter how small or big it is. For this reason managing it well to keep its integrity is a very key thing in the GIS environment or Data analysis process. In my experience using various tools and methods to analyze data gives me lot of insights about the data which is a powerful trick under my belt.
