Last thing staff want is to give an opinion early on in a project but then get ignored because project leads get antsy with getting the project done. All it takes is one (or a few projects) for staff to gain the illusion that they will be involved but then that gets taken away due to the shortened timeline of project. That’s a very very quick way to lose the trust and engagement of staff.

Staff are already trying to balance nursing updates, patient acutity and staffing shortages. The last thing they need is a massive change in the form of an IT project with little to no warning. As a leader or educator, even if you think you’ve given ample heads up or training through the various methods- it usually isn’t enough and the staff needs more. Not everyone reads emails or flyers around the unit. Some aren’t even paying attention to shift huddle updates. Over advertise and over educate and you’ll have a smooth rollout of the IT change.
A fourth way to involve staff in IT quality improvement is to monitor and evaluate the outcomes of the IT change. This can be done by collecting and analyzing data on key indicators, such as quality, safety, efficiency, effectiveness, usability, satisfaction, and impact. By monitoring and evaluating outcomes, you can assess whether the IT change has achieved its intended goals, benefits, and value. You can also identify and address any gaps, problems, or opportunities for further improvement. You can also recognize and reward the achievements and contributions of staff, and celebrate the success of the IT change.

Staff want to be involved in change. After all, they usually have all the answers to an organizations’ problems. Unfortunately, due to timelines a lot of projects are rushed and rollout without staff being involved, educated or even made aware of the change! Take extra precautions to ensure staff can be involved with ample time. Otherwise, it’s one more project that staff will struggle to become engaged with and adoption of the change might be bumpy.
