A few things to set the stage. At the start of the year, call each parent to introduce yourself and demonstrate that you know their child well. When you get a chance, try to send a positive email about the child to the parent. Later if the parent is contacted (by phone, not email!) with negative news, a solid relationship has already been built. The conversation is more likely to be successful.
