Many leaders still hold the belief that they should craft the vision by themselves, which is very outdated. Your team—all the people who contribute to the delivery of processes toward the vision—should have ownership of it. To co-create the vision, it is not necessarily about the direct formulation of the vision itself. You can also: - Have discussions to reflect on values and purposes - Conduct surveys on stakeholder understandings - Collaborate to do a SWOT analysis - Ask for the anticipations of future All basic steps, but approach it with a 'we' mindset, not a self-centric one. Then you can find the ideal vision for your team or organization.

I agree that this step is a must. A few months back we had the opportunity to facilitate the creation of a vision and mission for a finance team and it was amazing to sit and work with the team and help them define what the teams vision and mission was. The leader was involved but he made sure to involve and seek the input of everyone on the team so it was a shared vision. In order for it to work everyone needs to believe they have ownership.
