In my experience, beyond basic tests like continuity and insertion loss, some crucial fiber optic tests include the Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) Test for signal integrity over long distances, and the Chromatic Dispersion Test ensuring efficient high-speed data transmission, and the Cross-talk Test for interference between adjacent fibers, ensure the reliability and performance of fiber optic networks.

OTDR & PM/LS test should be perform for metro & PON networks. While for long haul DWDM network, chromatic dispersion (CD) and PMD test must be performed.

In my experience there are different types of FO tests which are: - OTDR which troubleshoot FO which creates a virtual picture of FO cable route, which can measure the attenuation, length, splice loss, connector, locate any bends, breaks and defects. - Optical Power test: which one where the power level of light is measured at the end of FO.

One of the aspects of OTDR testing I have seen missed is the comparison between 1310nm and 1550nm readings. While a great majority of the system impacts are due to the cleanliness of fiber, there is also the aspect of microbends. A 1550nm signal is capable of traveling much farther than 1310, however, it is also more susceptible to microbends. In an OTDR trace if you see a point that has a higher impact in the 1550nm reading you need to check for an eccentric bend in the fiber this is usually in the splice case or the fiber panel. These event can be the result of splicing in a tight window or outage. Due to these time constraints often OTDR readings are only made at one wavelength rather than both.
