During the setup you will also be able to configure access policies. Moreover, you can configure your multi-factor authentication (MFA) to sit between the SSO and firewall. The logical network sequence will follow from SSO/MFA authentication to the firewall. This will add a significant layer of security to your network.

It is important to understand that SSO does not provide any security benefits other than having all login logs from one source and reducing logs from multiple source and its more about ease of use. Additionally keep in mind that after implementing SSO and integrating it with your Firewall and IDS systems make sure that you recive logs from it in your SIEM/log management systems and parse them accordingly. Newer approaches such as PKI and passwordless systems are hot in the market right now.

Firewalls falls into critical infrastructure for any organizations so that means it has to be protected at all costs and adding multiple layers so that it can't be compromised. Integrating with SSO is primary step which we can take to protect it along with mandatory MFA control. If organization doesn't have budgetary constraint then they can also opt for PAM and route all critical infrastructure through PAM so that every sessions, changes are recorded and administrators can maintain an audit trail for all activities done on firewalls.

If the basic concept of the OSI model is kept in the background it will keep things simple to understand, design, or troubleshoot any network setup. Single sign-on comes with lots of benefits, allowing users to use the same credentials and authentication for multiple systems. but if settings are not in line with the sensitivity of the data policy that can pose a huge risk. Having multiple authentication methods in place will add security and eliminate the risk of system access by unauthorized personnel or bots. A well-planned combination of the above is the way to secure and efficient network security.

Something to note is that with the integration, one can configure MFA authentication to work in line with the SSO system to the firewall (WAF).

While it reduces the difficulty of remembering passwords , atleast OTP an based reauthentication should be implemented when we try to jump from one system to other for ex Currently SSO authenticated user is connected to the firewall now User tries to connect to Intrusion Detection System he should be reauthenticated via OTP or some other mechanisms. So reverification happens every time he switches or reconnects between different critical devices. While this affects adversely to the user experience it provides an added layer of security along with SIEM.
