We need to avoid being overruled by stakeholders, but to be aligned, we need to take into account all their constraints and concerns. When we ignore them, we end up with endless opinion battles that hinder progress. When it comes to customers, we need to structure the opportunity we are about to explore. For a desired outcome we define a couple of solution ideas that we want to test with customers. In reality, we test the underlying assumptions rather than the ideas themselves.

Based on my experience, we should avoid huge backlogs, counting on prioritization techniques to tell us what to build first. Although the techniques are good, their application is challenging, because we need to define the business and customer objectives, as well as the weighting of each. Scoring them is another challenge. It's much more effective to prioritize the business objectives that we want to support with the product development. There are usually less than five in any given quarter. From there, we explore the opportunities and solutions and compare them against each other, aligning on the three most important ones. The prioritization is never perfect but it's enough to know where to dig in deeper and to start testing assumptions.

Finally, you need to iterate and evaluate your feedback to measure its impact and effectiveness on your product engineering outcomes and goals.
